trouble getting reverse.

hi all was good went in and out of rev. good then all of a sudden i was having problem getting into reverse, bought new shift cable kit and when i took bottom end off i see shift spline is just hanging is that normal or should shift spline stay up in place, or does it get pushed up when u put bottom end on thanking u in advance for your time ps when i push up seems to shift ok

What is make/model of equipment you're referring to?

Would guess MC-1/R/MR/Alpha One based on provided info. But that's a guess.

Ayuh,.... The silver washer on top of the shift spool holds it up,....

i can see the silver washer it is just above cotter pin which goes just under silver washer but see no way to hook up washer to hold it in place thanks for your time

If I understand correctly by given info you're asking about the shift foot to lower shift shaft splined connection.

If so, there's a washer that rest on the lower shift shaft bushing that the shift foot (brass) fitting rests on. This prevents the shift foot from degrading the shaft seal.

There also is a washer between the drive shaft housing (upper) and cotter pin holding (loosely) the shift foot.

By your first post you mention replacing the shift cable kit, guessing the lower. There is no need to drop/split the gear case from the driveshaft housing to complete this task

i am not good at explaining myself sorry but ty for your help, i want to change impellar and that is why i separated it there, i got bottom end off and when i look inside top piece see a sleeve in which shifter slides into there is a washer there that i see it is above the cotter pin it is lose, but do not see where it would hold it up wife thought it may hang down so i can see to put together and fit shifter into lower spindle easier

Ayuh,..... The lower unit holds it up,....
do u think i would need new shift cable if when i shift fr remote i fell piece move which i took pic of or can u tell fr that thanking u in advance for your time

Ayuh,..... If the lower shift cable is original, it's waayyy past it's due date,.....
If it's 10 years old, it's past it's due date,......
If you couldn't fix it with a simple adjustment, before you took it apart, it's past it's due date,.....

What happens is, the inner cable wears a groove in the outer cable housing, so it looses the amount of travel it can move it's ends,.....

that outdrive is a load of the corrosion .....nasty issues

hi hate to bother u again, but when i took outdrive off lots of grease all around looks like water got in how big a job will that make it and what do u think i need to replace thanking u in advance for your time

hoping i got lucky. and water is getting in tru shift cable it is all corroded in there

Water in the bellows: Inspect the bellows very well, looking for any checks/cracks especially when the bellhousing is lifted. If this is new to you and unknown service history, would recommend replacing driveshaft, shift, and less importantly exhaust bellows. Replace the shift shaft bushing. Replace the shift cable. Inspect the ujoints closely, replace if there is excess play/not smooth/rust. Check gimbal bearing. Replace if it doesn't turn smoothly. Check alignment. Get Mercruiser shop manual.

All of that is a solid day, maybe 2 if you haven't done it before or if you run into issues.
