Trim works up but not down

I have a 50hp evinrude 4-stroke, Trim works up but not down. you can hear the relay/solenoid clicking but nothing happens. Also disassembled electric motor. It had oil in it. I am assuming the oil shouldnt be there?? and I should replace the shaft seal. I've bench tested the motor and it appears fine. I also removed the motor wire from the up solenoid (which works) and ground it. Down then works. Am I chasing a bad ground???

Please help, Season in Ont. CAN. is just about over.

Swap the relays and see if down works and up does not, if so you have a bad relay.

That was our original thought, my father in-law replaced the down relay and still just clicks.

hot wire the motor to a battery and make sure trim works. if it does then back one step and hot wire the relays with a VOM on both input and output ( post 87 and post 30 ).

I had similar issues with an '86 70hp we picked up earlier this year. Intermittent issues with up/down working then not working. I fixed a couple of broken wires and some corroded connectors but there were STILL issues. Finally I pulled apart EVERY SINGLE CONNECTOR and plug/socket in the harness and around the motor and cleaned them ALL up. That did it.

Even if they look ok, use some electrical contact cleaner. If there is obvious corrosion damage, handle that as needed. I also sprayed them all with CorrosionX before putting them back together for the final time. No issues for the last several months.

I removed the relays. The relay posts are not numbers. With first relay I have continuity between ground and output, no cont. between input and out put. When i power the coil, cont. switches to from input to output. seems normal to me.
the second relay I have no cont. between ground and output. but when the coil is powered I do have cont. from input to output. which relay is defective? I believe I should have continuity from ground to output until i power the relay.
