Trim wiring.. 5 wire tt

3 wires control tilt, they are

Red (which is the feed/supply/constant)
Green (down)
Blue (up)

Then I've got 2 smaller gauge wires in the same sheathing, black and white...

Can't figure out what they do... I'm going to imagine they signal to operate Trim, as opposed to Tilt? They're not for the depth/gauge.

Unsure of tt brand manufacturer model number, here's a picture of it.... Evinrude 140 ob..1980 boat it's all on..

Those small wires are simply for a trim gauge.----Often not installed.

Well how do I operate the trim, then? Going past full tilt I either direction automatically engages trim?

Is this not the depth/tilt "gauge"? (It's a sending unit/sensor, not the gauge itself obviously)
It's a different set of 2 wires, not in the 5 sheath.

You have one of the newer designed PTT units, with two trim rams and one tilt ram. When your motor is down, and you run the PTT unit in the up direction, the twin trim rams move the motor, which can be under full power. After those trim rams are fully extended, if you continue to operate the PTT unit in the up direction, the single tilt ram takes over. It is not very strong, so if the motor is in gear with some throttle, the motor will not tilt. If the motor is in neutral or off, it will tilt. The same PTT switch controls both trim and tilt.

Your PTT motor is referred to as a 2 or 3 wire, depending on how it is wound. Older PTT motors are the 3 wire style, where a dedicated ground wire is used. Power is applied to either of the non ground wires, to spin the PTT motor in either direction. That power is supplied by solenoids or heavy switches and wiring.

Newer PTT units use a 2 wire motor, where polarity of the battery is switched to reverse the direction of the PTT movement. Switching of the polarity is accomplished by using relays which supply ground when not energized, and +12VDC when energized.

The small black wire is likely a ground for the solenoid's or relay's primary circuit. The white wire may be for the PTT gauge.

There i am wrong again.
I mean it's possible the obvious gauge is some sort of aftermarket addon and the 2 in the sheath were meant to be the original gauge somehow inside the tt assembly. Who knows, that's what I'm asking.

You might look into replacing that roller before it breaks off and the axle damages your hull...

That is not what I asked; I asked in a 3 wire PTT why are there 5 wires in the sheath... 10ga Red/Green/Blue power the tilt...can't figure out what 14ga black and white do.

Gee, five wires: Red is power into the PTT system, Green is down, Blue is up, Black is usually ground. So that leaves 1 wire. How is the harness routed.

Black and white werent connected; they were snipped a few inches back in the 3 wires were crimped and sent to the buttons. But the PTT won't tilt or trim down, has fluid, makes strong noise, does go up.. figured b4 taking the thing out to replace all the seals id hope these wires did something.

Black and white have continuity, if that helps you think about it. Red is power and is a completed circuit with any other wire.

The little black wire and the white wire have to do with the trim gauge !----Trim / tilt will work fine with those little wires thrown on your garage floor !!

Those wires might be for setting your max down travel. I seen it while researching my own issues. not sure of what unit it was but they said.
1 key on and lower unit to max
2 key off, join wires
3 key on, raise motor to desired max down travel
4 key off, disconnect wires and max down travel should be set
I am not any kind of expert on this and have never tried it myself. Just something I remember seeing somewhere.
