Brand new to the site and a brand new owner of my first pontoon boat - 2002Monark (20ft) w/ 50 HP Mercury Big Foot. I have a question about the operation of the power trim/tilt. When the boat is still, I can trim/tilt the motor up but as soon as I ramp-up the throtle, the motor tilts down to the horizontal position. Is this normal? I was told it was a safety feature to prevent the water pump from over heating. Is there any way it can be disabled?

Thanks.

Re: Trim/Tilt Question

There is a 20 degree tilt limiter if the RPM is above 2000rpm. Maybe that's your problem, as it shouldn't be tilted at high speeds.

Why in the world would you want your water pump to burn up and destroy your powerhead? Not that I should complain. As a marine mechanic, cooked powerheads put food on my table. ;)

If the prop is out of the water it shouldn't be running at all. It will fry the water pump in seconds with no water in it. Why would you want high rpms with the motor tilted?

I don't think it's suppose to trim either up or down without your input..sounds like a problem since you should be able to trim it a few degrees and hold that trim at any speed just make sure your not trimming it to far out..but as far as I know, it is not suppose to *auto trim to straight down regardless unless I'm totally wrong.

Re: Trim/Tilt Question

So it sounds like there is a "tilt" limit when under power. Thanks for all the input. I will do some more testing this weekend and let you know what I find out.

Thanks.

Please do, its how this place works best. :)

There may be a limiter but it won't solve why your's is dropping all the way down without input?

Re: Trim/Tilt Question

Well, I did some testing this weekend and found the "auto" tilt/trim to be working just fine.....I think. Is there any adjustment on this auto tilt/trim feature? How does it work? I would like to have a little more positive trim available while under power. The amount of negative trim I have is useless...I can trim down so far it almost cuts the top speed in half.

Thanks.
