Trim Pump Problem. 88 V6 135HP

Went to trim motor up today.Was making grinding type sound and going very slowly.Trimmed back down sounded ok.Noticed fluid leaking from pump.Want to refill to see where leaking.Need to trim to full up position to check level.Will I damage pump if I try to tilt all way up....doesn't sound good.

Pump is square type mounted on transom bracket.

I,m far from an expert on this type of motor tilt I,ve dealt with I/O pumps and pistons. grinding gears does not sound good. I suspect a bad pump gear but also the leak needs to be repaired to confirm this. Where is it leaking? The seal pump housing ? i,m not sure if this has hose I did have a 1997 40 hp with a trim tilt but i let him junk it after stripping what i could in 2 hours what a mistake that was. I have a manuel 40 hp 2 cyl 2 stroke working on a 115HP. I don,t remember any hoses but I could be wrong. like I said if no hoses I think the pump gear electric motor gear is shot. weathere or not it can be changed i don,t know This is just a suggestion

This is the old square Eaton pump, the grinding is in the motor not the pump. Usually this is from water intrusion and upper bushing siezes and spins in cap. You will not damage the pump(hyd. parts) but the motor will need replacing soon. The OEM motor is has been NLA for several years and only option was to update it, but now MES has a direct replacement motor that fits these older units. The part number is T1073M.

Thanks guys,I panicked and called my money pit (mechanic) He says the grinding noise is from air in the system.Said to trim up and fill,then see what happens.Do it tomorrow and let ya know.

Took mechanics advice and trimed up to fill....now its stuck half way...lol.Wont go up or down,just spinning motor.Will activate manual release tomorrow to lift and lock.said it should work after filling.though still have blown seal on tilt ram to deal with.May need a hoist for this job.....or the mech can do it for.....$500 for a little seal!!
