Trim Problem

I have 1999 twin Evinrude 150 Ficht motors on my CC. The trim on the port side motor would only work in the down position and not up. I have checked all of the connections and relays and they are fine. I bypassed the entire relay box with a jumper wire straight from the battery to the 2 wire plug that goes to the trim pump and it works up and down, eliminating a pump problem. I removed the relay housing and relays from the starboard side motor, that was working fine, and installed it on the port side motor and it still will not go up. Any ideas?

Re: Trim Problem

swap the up and down relays and see if the problem swaps. if not then use a meter and make sure that your connecting terminals are making solid connections (including ground wires) to the relay itself. Also check to see if you have a trim limit switch that might be sticking.

Re: Trim Problem

I swaped all of the relays thinking that was the problem, but it did not work. I tried chasing down all of the wires that anything to do with the trim and checking to see if they have continuity. Have not finished this process - a bunch of wires. I have not checked the trim limit switch and don't even know where it is located. Do you know?

Re: Trim Problem

The t/t limit switch is located on the tilt tube and has blue/white wires running to it. You may want to follow the wires back to their connectors, pull them appart and use a jumper wire to by-pass the switch.

Good point! Have you tried the t/t sw in both the control handle and on the cowling ? One would have assumed you have but you know what assumption is.

Re: Trim Problem

push the switch up and check the voltage on blue-ish control wire going into relay. push the switch down and check the voltage on the greenish wire. if you get correct control voltages at correct times but do not hear clicking then check the relay coil ground (pin 86?). If you do hear clicking then check the switched ground (fat black wire).
