Re: Tri hull restoration

YD has told you the $$ numbers. It all depends on the boat you buy and the issues it has. $1,000 tp $2,000 will be the number. It is impossible to get any more precise than that. You WILL get all the help you need here on the forum so THAT will NOT be an issue. You just need to decide what you want and IF you want to spend the time, money and effort to rebuild a boat. Rememeber a New one costs a minimum of $15 grand. You can restore almost any boat to like new condition for less than $10 grand so you WILL save money but... You will work your behind off and spend a LOT of time to get her on the water. But the sense of accomplishment is GREAT and it will be better than factory and last for decades.

Your decision!!!

Woodonglass,
Thank you for your response...I guess I was misleading with my previous post...I guess what I meant was to see if people would be willing to show me their projects as well as their cost...I understand if people dont want to share the cost as that is personal information...I was wanting for people to share what they have done and maybe share what they put into it...didnt mean to seem like i was ignoring YD

All you have to do is search the forum. You'll find a plenty of threads on tri-hull rebuilds and what they did and what they used.

My above post is Cost just for the materials.. ( You can save $ if you have some materials and are good with formating your build to save materials for later parts of the resto..but you have to be thinking Ahead and program your build to meet your material list ).

No .. I dont see 2k going into a 16-18 trihull footer for just a full structural support job. I can see topping more then 2k on the ETC add-0ns depending ...

Care to show us some pic of what your project might be ?

YD,
Thank you for your post and taking the time to try and help me out...the more i look at price of materials and such I couldn't agree more with your estimate...I don't have a boat picked right now and seem to be leaning more towards a tinny right now...truckdrivingfool got me thinking that for my first resto it might be wise to start off on the easier side...

haha...jbcurt00...it must be looked down upon to back out of doing the glass restore...actually, i am a school teacher and the year is about to start so i also think a tinny will be easier on my schedule and i am in a duplex rental cause i am about to move since i got hired in another county...i really would not have a place to put the cap from a glass boat because i only get to parking spaces...who knows, i still might get a trihull if the deal is right...let me know where i can get the shirt just in case ;)

I'd count on about $2k for all the repairs. Transom, deck, stringers, and the one everyone discounts/neglects, trailer. It all adds up quick. 2 tires here, new bearings or maybe an axle/leaf springs/bunks/rollers. New seats/upholstery. I paid someone to upholster the seats I made along with side panels and it was significant. They came out amazing, but marine vinyl and foam is expensive.

Do not let any of this discourage you. My wife was horrified when I brought my boat home. I don't believe she would let us not have a boat now. We have the absolute best moments of our life on it now.

Not by some, and certainly not looked down on by me. Grinding & polyester resin fab work isn't for everybody. Many, many, many who start it don't finish, and of those that do finish, many never do again. Others may even encourage the abandonment of glass in favor of tin. Everyone likes what they like, and as boats go there are compromises to be made. Tin gets hot in the sun, even on lighter colored boats (crazy hot on darkly colored), so even tin has drawbacks. None are perfect for everyone's needs, wants & etc.

Decide how you'd like to use a boat & where. Then decide how much you'd like to spend total on a boat, trailer, motor, odds & ends on all the above, rehab/resto costs. Then find something that fits those perimeters.

Glass may be cheaper, or free, but will run higher in resto costs of time, tools & materials. Tin in some areas isn't very common, less sought after, and inexpensive. While in other areas, it rare, highly sought after & expensive.

For me, boats are boats if they float, so either works. I hope to enjoy both glass & tin redone by my own handiwork at some point.

Thank you for being a teacher. Ever considered teaching shop, or small boat repair:D

I'll have to let you know about the shirts;)

jbcurt00,
haha thanks for the encouragement...wasnt sure if i was gonna be banned from the sight if i went with a tinny haha...i am mostly going to be fishing with the boat and occasionally just take it out with some buddies...i kinda like the idea of a deep hull tracker or lund...something that is designed to fish but can handle a few more ppl in the boat (2-3)...haha i teach earth science in NC...mostly water quality and wildlife type knowledge here lol...but that would be cool...i do have plans on how to build a hovercraft from a leaf blower so maybe it will work out

Well at this point it does not seem like you really need to get into a full try-hull resto ;) ..

A Tinny could be a very viable option for you right now. Get boating :D .
