Re: Tri-Hull - Advantages and Disadvantages?

First time boat owner here. Been out in the water 4 times.

you can see a pic of my tri hull rebuilt here ...

I didn't understand what everyone was saying at first but now I do.

During choppy water it gets to be a very harsh ride. And a very wet ride. but I like how stable it is even with wakes passing by.

In the process of looking for leaks in the hull... was out for 4 hours last saturday and after removing the drain plug I got around 5 gallons of water. Although we were facing 6 feet waves and everyone was wet inside and the bow even dug into the waves at some point. My main bilge pump (1,100 gallons / hour) was not functioning fully. My aux pump (1,500/gal/hour) was pumping the water out good so I still can't figure out why I had about 5 gallons of water when I unplugged the drain plug.

Overall, I like it. I've tried a V hull (my friends) on exactly the same choppy waters and it was pretty nice and smooth ride. But right now, with the time and money spent on my tri hull I wouldn't even think about replacing it just yet.

It is pretty heavy though...

Re: Tri-Hull - Advantages and Disadvantages?

my step father bought a new glastron t156 tri in the 70s
great lake only fish ski boat. had a 70 johnston ob on it. was rated for 85.

i still remember my butt and back hurting as we crossed wakes to get to the center of the lake. being a fifteen footer anything over a 1 foot chop was murder at WOT. it didnt like cross wake at all.
my mother thought the walk thru open bow was cold and windy.

we had lots of fishin fun on it tho. very stable with three heavy weights walking around in it looking for the best place in the boat to still fish. average load was six people.

I own a deep v now and love it. for lakes its great.

just some personal thoughts for u

cheers

Pretty much what everyone here says:

Stable when anchored or drifting.

Rough in choppy water and with that I like to add a more wet ride.

14' Tri-hull (restored)

IMO, not all tri-hulls are a wet ride, I used my old 16' Wellcraft Airslot with a 135hp Johnson outboard, on the Great South Bay L.I. in all kinds of weather, and found it to be one of the dryest boats for it's size, compared to all others I had ;)

With my 73 Wellcraft, I get the best of both worlds! Deep V and sponsons to the sides for stability.

Re: Tri-Hull - Advantages and Disadvantages?

I know that this is an old post and I am not trying to hi jack this by any means. I have been trying to find other boats like mine, but with no luck. I love tri hulls ever since my father had one when I was a kid and it rocked as a flats boat. Held more weight than a V and floated in 6 inchs of water.

Now, the link I followed from your post MikeDee is exactly like mine. The company mine was made by is Sabre, so the title says. I bought it from an older man who attempted to rebuild the boat, but lost interest due to age so I picked it up. Were there any other companies that made the same style as the air slot? My build date is 1978 by Sabre Boat Manufacturing. I love the deep V entry, but did not know that they were considered hybrids. I just thought mine was a bit different being it was older than my fathers, along with the fact that I can fly through some thick chop with no problems. Wouldnt trade this thing for any new flats boat.

I have a 86 sabre I have restored and run it inland georgia coast w/93 johnson and jack plate I love like it's my wife

Every single boat has pros/cons.
I will say I found my MFG 15 was a total blast!
