Transom thickness!

I am currently in the process of rebuilding my transom. I have seen specs that it is supposed to be 2" thick. I have an 88 4.3L mercruiser alpha 1. Where can I find the min/max transom thickness specs for my engine/drive.

Mercruiser calls for a thickness between 51-57mm or 2-2.25 in.

While that is the proper thickness, flatness and parallelism is even more critical.
