1.jpgI attached a bunch of pictures: After removing the Gimbals and everything else out of the (Money pit  ) My Transom Is definitely shot! I don't have a issue with replacing it. My issue is dealing with the way the engine compartment was designed. The boat looks like a 3 part construction. Hull, Topside, Engine bay. The engine bay area was screwed into the transom with a dozen or so 1 in screws.
Should this be an issue? Or, When I make the new transom and engine mount box (don't know what else to call it) should I Tab it all in together?

Re: Transom Tango?.

Tab it! Using mechanical fasteners through glassed in wood is asking for trouble... probably one of, if not the reason your transom is rotted.

I agree! I have no intention of putting screws into the Transom..

There are a bunch of how to threads on the forum. The transom just rotted away from being saturated with water, it's not from termites. The next problem your facing is that the rest of the wood under the deck (stringers) will be in the same shape.

The transom will be bonded to the hull with a concoction referred to around here as "peanut butter or PB for short, it's a mixture of your choice of resin (polyester or epoxy) cabosil and maybe some milled glass fibers. You can find recipes for it with a site search or maybe someone will chime in with their recipe.

You should educate yourself on the finer points of boat restoration by reading as many different fiberglass boat restoration threads as you can in this forum. You'll learn what to do and how to do it before you start your own resto.

This is a good thread to start with:

... and here's a thread about peanut butter recipies:

The stringers and bulkheads have already been replaced.
