Transom / Splashwell Removal

Hey there everyone - I'm in the beginning of my rebuild, 1990 1778 Yarcraft WW - deck/stringers/transom. I have all of the rivets removed from the cap/hull and am ready to remove the cap. The problem is the splashwell is bonded to the transom somehow. I can get the cap from the bow to separate no problem but if I try to lift the cap off from the stern, she's stuck.

Does anyone have suggestions on getting it to break free? I really do not want to cut anything from the outside if at all possible.

Do you need pics? If so I can get some up soon.

Thanks

The aft part of the splashwell where the motor bolts is bonded to the transom. No good way to get that loose. You can try some wedges but you will probably tear it up.

Yeah that's what I'm worried about, do I cut the splashwell out and try and glass it back in after the transom is repaired? There is that small 3" lip that goes over the transom from the splashwell, if I were to cut that lip off and get a pry bar in there or even a long sawzall blade...I'm just trying to think of something without ruining the thing completely.

This is what I wound up doing with my '78 Glastron. I could not get access underneath to free it up, so I cut the back section of the splashwell in order to free up the cap. Not pretty, but in the words of many on this forum...almost anything fiberglass can be fixed.

Re: Transom / Splashwell Removal

A multi-tool may help, I used on to free up the cap at the transom on my FireFlite:

It also allowed me to cut the top lip & edge of the splashwell free along the top of the transom wood. A longer sawzall blade could be passed down behind the wooden transom between it & the fiberglass skin of the boat, to loosen that top several inches of wood bonded to the transom skin. This then allows you to cut horizontally thru the transom wood from the interior of the boat, below the splashwell, stopping short of cutting thru the exterior fiberglass skin of the transom.

Once the cap is off, you can cleanup the pieces of wooden transom still adhered to the underside of the cap....

Ok here are a few pictures. I was able to get a pry bar from below and it did free up in a couple spots from below, the outside/top is still attached quite well to the top of the transom. I'll try freeing that up tomorrow.

This one is looking up underneath where it's attached to the transom...not much to see here except a major PITA.

Sanding / Grinding Transom

Sanding / Grinding Transom

So I've gotten this far and thought i was done sanding...but it seems like I need to get the whole transom looking like what's in the center of the picture...or is that too much too far ?

Using epoxy resin if that matters.

How do you intend to install the transom?

Epoxy + cabosil spread evenly on the transom wood, then clamped to the skin

If you are going to use thickened epoxy to the consistency of Peanut butter then I'd say you're good to go. I would say that Epoxy is not required but it is your choice.

Here is an idea. I have no idea what you were working on so I searched and found another thread. We kind of like doing housekeeping and it makes it easier to check progress when things are consolidated.

I am merging your threads and you can continue asking your questions and getting answers in one place ;)

Hey thanks Bob_VT I couldn't find that other thread for the life of me.

Now I see I can find my "latest posts" under my profile...sorry about that.
