I've got a 87 mercruiser alpha 1 with a 3.0 and I'm going to replace the transom seal while I've got it torn down. THe one I ordered is too long but it's the only one in the book. Anyone know anything about this?

If what you have is a rubber rope about 3/4" in diameter. just glue it down in the groove and cut the so it's just a little long and cut it square and glue the ends together, I use bellows adhesive to hold it in the groove and between the ends. Put the joint at the top, which will normally be out of the water anyway.

yes Don ... that sounds like what I've got . I can't believe they don't make one that fits without modification, but if you've tried this and it works then I'll take your word for it . Thanks

Tried it, that is how all the Volvo seals are, just a rubber rope, and you cut to length. No big deal.

Re: transom seal

I gave the guy at the shop the serial# off the engine and he ordered one that is supposed to fit.
