I am currently in the progress of restoring a 14' larson aluminum boat and I need some suggestions on replacing the transom.
I have removed the old rotted transom that was placed on top of the aluminum on the back of the boat like a cap.
I plan to replace the transom with solid wood but my question is what type of wood to use? The old transom is rotted to a point where I can not identify what type of wood it was. What type of wood do you reccomend to replace it with?

Re: Transom Replacement

I would recommend exterior plywood sealed with epoxy resin then painted. Most importantly, do not use pressure treated as it will eat your aluminum.

Re: Transom Replacement

Welcome to iboats!

Yes I replaced a transom in a 14' aluminum boat years ago. The old transom was so rotted away that it just crumbled when touched.

Exterior plywood (either 1/2" or 3/4") glues together to make the proper replacement thickness and as stated above COMPLETELY sealed up ON ALL EDGES. Polyester fiberglass resin or epoxy resin........ you could even go for less money and use an exterior polyurethane coating in multiple coats.

Have fun restoring the transom and boat. Here in the restoration section you will see all sorts of tips and advice for your boat. Painting with the proper prep and primer, sealing leaks with gluvit and even modification ideas.

Once again.... Welcome!

Re: Transom Replacement

Hello Nathen..and welcome to Iboats..

Personally..for a 14 footer..

Grab some Marine grade Ply ( you said Solid wood..but im assuming you ment plywood ). OH..and dug fur ..not Mohogany ply if you can help it :)

The amount you need for your transom might be aquired from your local boat yard..or even Craigs.

What you want to finish your wood is a totaly different subject..and we would need to have more info before suggesting what resins or finish coatings you would need.. .. Just MYO though...

YD.
