Transom Replacement Question

Hi,

I'm in the process of tearing out my old transom from my aluminum boat however I have these two aluminum drainholes that pass through the wood transom and aluminum outer sheathing. Just wondering how to remove / replace them? I've attached a couple pictures...

Do a search on the forum main page, there is a 'factory' flair tool to make the flare on the other end after you pass it thru the hull. There are also a few different 'home-made' flair tool diagrams posted in various threads. I downloaded this pix from 1 of those threads, since he posted it on line for our reference, I don't think he will mind me posting it here:


Since you have an aluminum hull, I only posted an aluminum drain tube, there are also brass & plastic, they may all be available in multipiece tubes so no flair tool is needed. I would prefer to flair a 1 piece continuous tube rather then use a 2 part tube....

Thanks for the great info. So I guess I'll carve out the wood surrounding it and cut it in half with a hacksaw blade or something like that. Then pull each end out seperately.

Take care during transom wood & drain tube removal & don't pry against the exterior transom aluminum skin. Especially if you have removed the wood on the interior side of the skin. In an aluminum hull, the existing tube is probably aluminum too so a hack saw blade sounds like a good plan. If it's any other metal, the hack saw blade will still work. Mine seems to be rusty tin can metal....

Just take a chisel or an old screw driver and knock the lip off the inside of both. the Punch em out the back side. Use the flairing tool when you reinstall. Easy Smeazy.

Ok will give the chisel a try thanks for that piece of info. Now I removed the end caps so here's dilema number 2. Do I cut off a piece of aluminum to remove but more importantly replace the transom in one piece or is there some other trick to doing this. The current transom looks like a mess that was fixed several times in pieces here and there.

It looks like they only replaced the center of the transom and epoxied it to the side pices instead of ripping it all out and replacing it as one large piece. That might explain why it's bowing outwards.

I have an aluminum bottom plate that the transom sits in however it's riveted in place so I don't see how I can get the new transom in from the inside "as it's 1.5 inches thick without cutting out at least one side of under the endcap.
