Transom Repair Question

My dad is giving me an old 12 ft Gregor. The wood on the transom has dry rot and I would like to repair it. Because of the way the it fits in the hull and the brace welded to the floor I don't see any easy way to do the job. Maybe if I installed the new wood in more than one piece I could do it without cutting the metal. Does the wood need to be one piece? I don't know if it reinforces the metal hull or is just something for the outboard clamps to press against. I am surprised the boat was designed with no way to remove and replace the wood without cutting up the boat. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Well :welcome: aboard Traildadd to iboats...

Not seeing your hull or how it is constructed, I can only offer mere guess ideas. If there is a welded bracket that attaches to the transom wood, then you can cut the fasteners and remove the old rotted wood and make a replacement with exterior plywood and coat it with a few coats of this;

WOG's old timers wood preservative Formula of;
! part linseed oil,
2 parts mineral spirits and
1 part spar varnish

Apply a couple coats of that mixture paying close attention to all the edges and install your new transom as one piece. It will have a lot more structural capability as one piece. JMHO

Post a few pictures for better options!

Ditto on what GM280 said, need Pics to give everyone a better idea of what you are looking at. Don't forget you need at least 3 posts before you can post pics on the site. So the other option is to do a photo bucket/drop box until you have your three

I got the boat to my house so I got some pictures. Since photobucket doesn't do hosting anymore I'll post them soon.

The braces welded at the bottom are your knee braces. I would not remove them to replace the transom unless there is cracking at the welds on the bottom needing repair.

Removing the transom cap ( The middle piece of metal ) and the end caps allowing you to pull the transom wood up and out is a better repair in most cases. The exception would be if the transom caps are solid pieces running up both gunnels. That might be more difficult to do than most tin boats.

Can't tell from the pics how the transom end caps are installed.

As to why they are so difficult to access, boat manufacturers don't really design boats for repair.

Howdy Traildadd,

Couple things to help us give you some answers.

1. Give the boat a good wash so we can see the bottom of your knee braces.
2. A couple pictures from different angles of your knee brace would also help. As tnstratofam stated, you don't want to be removing your knee brace if its welded.
3. As for your caps, can you give us a couple pictures from different angles showing us how they are installed. Usually its just a couple rivets that need to be drilled out; however, it may be different in your case.
