Re: transom rebuild in cold garage

hi.....welcome aboard.

yup you can fix it in a cold garage......put heat lamps on the glass and if you can ....a ceramic heater.......

but its not fun...!..... i hate the cold. dress warm..in layers...youll find your self sweating in no time....so youll have to shed some layers.

2x18 s ?

your better off with 2 sheets of pressure treated ply wood....(dry the ply wood first).

if its 33 out side....you will have a month ...(mid april) to dry the wood....and rip out the old transom.....LOT'S OF TIME....the install is one day...and 48 hours cure time. after that ....the re-installation of the parts can go quite quick. the cap will take a day.

hope that helps
cheers

i only disagree with opps! on one thing. i prefer 3/4 exterior plywood, once ecapsulated, it does not matter. the treatment chemical is corrosive to metal fasteners, even after the wood is dry.

Re: transom rebuild in cold garage

td is right. pressure treated is nasty stuff.....and you would have to use special screws....for an o/b it might be the way to go.

pressure treated wood needs to be bone dry. or the resin wont stick to it. that means heat ...and you dont have it......you will have a little more tollerance with exterior in cold.

there is lots of posts on here reguarding transom replacement. you might want to hit search...and read ...read...read.

but were here for help.

(....and td....bet mine will last longer...:D :D lol)...(if it floats !)

cheers

thanks guys..
My engine is 300# 84 90hp mariner,my friend told me i can special order the 2x18( i never heard of it) The original transom was 2 inch wide.So you think 2
3\4 plywood will be strong enough???ceramic heat? I don't have it,I will use 2 heat lamps. Also going to replace the support between the transom and the livewell box. ohhh sorry about the spelling and the grammars ,english is my second language ..

what he said ^^^^.3/4 inside, 1/2 middle grain turned opposite way, 3/4 outside. i have always used this to glue my layer together, glob it on, and spread like you were setting tile, the screw together. but you need a warmer place for it to cure, under your bed???

here's some good info: http://70silverline.250free.com/Skankybeast.html

Oh, yeah, that poly is good.
You can anchor concrete with it.

But, remember, it is not a sealer; the wood needs to be incapsulated after gluing together.
and cloth, roven, biax, is involved there. Any will work.

wrapped up....sealed off....closed in.....totally covered.....

you must enclose the part and seal it so no water can reach it....(just an example)

Yea you can use that PL stuff to glue your sections of wood together. It is verry strong strff. I used it for that and for beds for the stringers that im working on. If you use it for stringer beds to prevent stiff joint i sudjest using a thick bead of it where the stringers are going to sit. That stuff is amazing made by PL. Thash did you use it to glue wood together all by itself?

Re: transom rebuild in cold garage

We use it in construction all the time. If you use it to glue dry wood to other wood, concrete (probably scuffed up glass); you will destroy the wood trying to take it back off, after 2 days of cure.
