This is my first splash after finishing my work on the boat. Not the best video, but it's proof the boat touched water! For the doubters among us...

Late in again, I know, but congrats on finally splashing. It must be a great feeling to have all those months of work finally pay off! As mentioned earlier in the thread, I'd like to see video of that boat hauling across the water! A Larson 186 with a 350ci MAG is a rare boat indeed!

Thanks, jsturvey. We're taking it up to Ontario this week and I should get lots of chances to run it on the lake. Can't wait to open it up!

And now, by request of a fellow Larson owner, some pics of the rear bench seat hinges...

This is the hinge on the starboard half of the bench seat, with the seat lifted up:

Hinges, from above.

Hope this helps!

Jim, I just read your complete thread tonight. I have a 99 186 that I think must have been thru Katrina. I dont know if I have the time or patience to do what you just did. I love how yours turned out!

Thanks,

Thanks, Tom. It really wasn't that bad. I sort of enjoyed it (except maybe the fiberglass grinding!). Lot's of great, patient and helpful folks here who can help walk you through it, if you get the notion to give it try.

I know so much more about my boat now, and I believe it's as good or better as when it left the factory.

Thanks again for the nice words!

Re: Transom problems with Larson 186 SEI I/O Bowrider

I took the boat up to our cabin in Ontario and enjoyed a week of tubing and boat rides with my daughter and two of her friends. Everything seems to be working great (except the depth finder...), so I'm calling this project finished! Here's some video of my baby in the water:

More video in the next post...

jbcurt00, after having my boat apart and seeing how all the systems and parts fit together, I have a much better understanding of why there is such a strong bias here against half-measures when it comes to addressing structural problems. I know my boat was rebuilt the right way, and really have a lot of faith in it and I know it's going to hold up to years of use. It's a good feeling!

Thanks!

Nice job. Looks like that boat can really scoot! Could hear just a bit of that V8 rumble. Congrats again! Time to enjoy it!

Thanks, jsturvey. We had it out every day for a week and we had a blast. It's great having it running again and I can't help but think of all my iboats friends everytime I take it out! You all got me through this.

Hi Jim,

Just sent a note with some pictures that I wanted to get your input on. Maybe my pics were too large and the whole thing was kicked out. Just started my 99 186 rebuild and I need your insight. Will post some pics once I know this reply went through.

Re: Transom problems with Larson 186 SEI I/O Bowrider

Jim,

Started today by removing all of the carpet. (who thinks carpet belongs in boats??) I have some serious rot. I suspect that this boat was sunk at one time. The 4.3 was removed and a 5.0 sits in its place (not the worst thing...). the deck is rotted all the way up and under the bow floor platform. It appears as though the original plywood deck goes over a 2x4 support and under some fiberglass sheeting all the way up to the tip of the bow. Do you think its even possible to remove the wood forward of the kick panels. Also, when I pulled the cover from the gas tank, I see that there are some holes in the gelcoat on the stringers. The foam in the stringers is wet. Would I need to cut the tops off the stringers and remove any of the wet foam? I just don't want to sink a bunch of time into a totaled boat. Looking for input from anyone with knowledge.

Thanks,

Tom G

Tom G. Instead of HiJacking someone's thread you should start your own here on the forum and post your pics there. That's the proper forum etiquette.

Re: Transom problems with Larson 186 SEI I/O Bowrider

Hi Tom, I'd agree that you'll get better assistance if you start your own thread, and as soon as I see it, I'll subscribe to it.

In the meantime, I'll try to address your questions. If the decking beneath the molded fiberglass bow section is rotten, I would think you might have to remove the entire cap from the boat... In my boat, the decking runs just up to the center compartment on the bow. I don't know how you'd replace the decking under the bow section if you didn't have access to to it. Have you removed any lining from two side compartments in the bow? That might let you see how much tabbing, etc., is holding the decking to that section of the hull.

I'm not sure it would be absolutely necessary to remove that section of deck if you can't get at. On my boat, that wood only really serves as the floor for the compartments. If I can get out to my boat in the next few days, I'll see if I can get my camera up in front of the ski locker to see how all that is attached in my boat. (I didn't replace any decking forward of the front of my ski locker. My deck was in pretty good shape in the front of the boat.) One reason you might start your own thread is to get some help on this part of your project.

Re: the engineered stringers, I'm not an expert, but I'd really be hesitant to cut the stringers/bulkheads without getting a lot more input from more experienced builders. My understanding is that the foam on the structural members provides little or no strength; the strength is all from the fiberglass that wraps the foam. Have you core-sampled the foam inside the stringers? I'd be tempted to leave them alone unless the foam was really saturated. If the foam is really wet, that might be another matter, but I'd want to know before doing too much. Are the pinholes in the stringers from the staples that held the decking down? (My deck originally was attached with thickened resin and staples.)

Given what you seem to be facing, even if you don't have to do anything with the stringers and the hidden part of the deck, you still have a pretty substantial time investment facing you... A new thread with lots more pictures would help you get feedback that will allow you to decide what you're facing.

I'll look for your thread and check in there.

Thanks so much for the response Jim and Supreme Mariner. I appreciate the input on both thread building and boat building.

I will start a new thread this evening titled "99 Larson 186 deck rebuild".

Thank you in advance for the knowledge I trust you'll share.

Tom
