I noticed today that the tires on my trailer are not wearing even. The tires in the rear seam to be wearing much faster then the ones in the front. There is this camber thinghy that seams to balance the weight across the two axels. Is it possible that it won't work? Honestly it looks like he tires on the rear axle have improper camber. Any rate take a look at the photos and let me know what you think.

The equalizers are pivot points between the two axles and pivot to help in turning and equalizing the load. The tires in the rear are being drug around corners and therefore more wear is taking place. Rotating the tires helps balance the ware but it's going to happen either way.

I would agree wit them being drug around the corner but there is something not right here. The tires and trailer were bought new in Feb on this year. The tires only have about 3,000 miles max on them. The tires seam to be warn more on the outside rather then inside.

I'm going to try to set you up to check alignment, it could be off a tad. Tape or mount a nail something that will not move. Jack up one axle evenly, spin the tire and spray paint on about the center or the tire and rotate it so the center is painted. Place the nail close to each painted surface and spin the tire so the nail makes a small mark it the tread on each tire. Stop the tire and take a tape measure and measure the distance front and back of the tire. It should be 0 to no more then 1/4 inch toe-in difference (lees on the front compared to the back).

Or you could take it to an auto wheel alignment shop and pay them to do it.

Is your trailer level? I believe,(?) you have more weight on those tires that are wearing out. Just my .02
Pics of your trailer, with Veh attached.

Wont that camber thing that ties the axles togeather distribute the weight even level or not?

Re: Trailer tires not wearing even.

It is not a "camber" anything.
It is an equalizer bar or beam.... Yes it WILL equalize the weight on the axles IF it isn't maxed out by the trailer being too far out of level

Considering the rear tires are worn does the boat need to go forward on the trailer?

Only if your tongue weight is not within spec.

The amount of weight difference between front and rear tire will be negligible assuming the equilizer isn't reaching the limits of its travel.

If what you say in you other post that you weren't keeping track of the inflation, that's the bigger issue. So were all the tires inflated properly or not?

What he said.... First the boat should be positioned on the trailer so that the transom is even with the back of the last cross member. Next the tongue weight should be set by positioning the axles...... weigh the loaded trailer and get the tongue weight... shoot for 10% of the total weight on the hitch ball.... next adjust the hitch height to get the trailer level.......

Of course the tires NEED to be maintained at the pressure marked on the sidewall.

After all this if you are still eating up tires then you probably have a bent axle.

Re: Trailer tires not wearing even.

My buddy has this problem with his car hauler.
But since he is unwilling to lower his lifted Dmax he replaces rear tires. I would think his trailer is at least 8 inches higher in the front. Doesn't look really excessive on a 20 ft trailer, but it is what it is.

sadly all he needs is a drop ball mount to level the trailer

What destroyed my tires

What destroyed my tires

Hoping someone here with more knoledge then I can tell by the photos what lead to their early destruction. I was not that good at checking the pressure and when I did I filled them up to 55PSI. I am going to have to replace all 4 of them and the spare which will set me back about $600. I would like to avid this in the future. I am not sure if the photos do it justice but the outside edges of the tires are worn pretty bad. The back is worse than the front.

Outside edge wear indicates under inflation. Back worn more than front indicates that either your weight balance on the trailer is bad or that your tongue/ball mount is too high.

Although from the pictures - they look like they have plenty of tread to me.

What kind of tires are those?

Re: What destroyed my tires

The axels have an equalizer on them. Would that not compensate for the toung being too high or low? As for the brand I don't know some cheep Chinese tires that came with it.

Nope, the equalizer does not compensate for setting your ball height incorrectly and it looks like you have already been told why they were wearing unevenly ;)

Re: Trailer tires not wearing even.

The transom is hanging about 1" over the bunks. Perhaps if I move the post forward that much it will put more weight on the hitch making it mire level. Does that sound sane?
