Trailer tires dryrotting again

Back in Nov 2019 I replaced the tires on four of my trailers, boat and otherwise.
All were dryrotted pretty bad and losing air.
I searched all over for American made tires but they apparently don't exist anymore.
For the smallest trailer, which takes ST4.80x8 6 ply tires, I bought Duro tires as the Carlisle tires I had on it didn't last two years before one exploded in the yard.
On the trailer under my 14ft aluminum boat I bought two new Kenda tires, it takes 4.80x12 tires. Today I had to put tubes in them because they were leaking through the sidewalls. That trailer is parked inside a large shed with a wood floor and no windows.
On my 18ft boat, its trailer takes 14" tires, so I searched and searched but couldn't find anything but ST rated tires in 14", so I ended up with Kenda ST205/75-14 tires in 6 ply. Those too are leaking now and I also had to add tire tubes. It gets parked under a large carport with the tires up on several pieces of 2x12 wood so I can get the bow up high in the air. The carport is closed in on two sides and backs up to my garage.
On my car trailer, it takes 14.5" tires, I was able to find LT8,00x14.5 tires for it, those seem fine so far.
I also have a small single axle camper that has Kenda Load Star ST225/75-15 8 ply tires on it, those tires are three years old and also leaking through cracked sidewalls now. Its got less than 10 miles on it since the new tires, which were dated 8 of 2018 when they were installed.
That's the only one that I can find LT tires for, and those tires would have to be from China.

The original tires on these trailers all lasted for many years, what's up with tires these days? I could understand if they were 10 or 20 year old tires but these aren't 2 years old yet. The one that blew up on the bike trailer was dated 11-2018, the remaining tire is dated 7-2018. All of my trailers get tire covers when their parked, all get parked on pavement, most are inside.

The tires I took off my car trailer in 2019 were original from the early 80's, the tires on my 18ft boat's trailer were just as old and still holding air. I only changed them because the rims were rusty. Its original tires were Goodyear Polyglass F78-15 bias ply tires, its what came new on that trailer back then. They were dry, and cracked badly on the sidewalls but they never leaked. The new tires seemed to loose air almost right away, even before showing any cracks. My 18ft boat's trailer also had GY Polyglass tires on it that were likely from 1978. It was cheaper and easier to buy whole wheel assemblies so that's what I did for all but the 14.5LT tires.

I used to work in a tire factory.-----I say----" Tires are all black but they are not all the same "------It is a shame that these inferior products have crept into our daily lives.

Carslile USA trail for the 12" and under sizes ( 50/50 shot of being USA made )
Goodyear Endurance for 13" and over
And Galaxy makes the best 14.5" tires you can buy. Samsons are ones that will get you by.

Kenda Loadstar and Carslile Radial Trail HD are good seconds

The only thing I could find was Kenda or Powerking in 14.5 here, the Kenda tires are actually my second set, the first set bubbled up and got lumpy the first trip with it, one went bald in 100 miles. They gave me my money back after checking the trailer and its alignment out and gave me the LT tires. That came from Kenda, not the dealer. I've not used it as hard since then but I did use it to haul a 14,000 lb load, (two tractors), from Ohio to PA, around 800 miles loaded and they did fine but they shake a bit, I've tried to balance them but no luck.
A buddy put Powerkings on his dump trailer and lost two on a trip to Kansas, so I avoided those.
The dealer told me to stay away from Carlisle, he said they sold out to the chinese and all were chinese made now. None of the Carlisle tires in the tire store said USA, even though they have a model that says USA right on the side, the fine print says PRC on it.
I replaced the tires on my car in March, the only USA made tires i could find were Cooper. Michelin tires said Thailand and Serbia on them, the BFG's said Israel, and Goodyear tires said China, Firestone was all imported as well. some said Vietnam, some Chile. I wanted the same tires I had but the Michelin X touring tires are gone. I settled for Cooper tires.
The problem is that if they were still made here, most of us likely couldn't afford them these days. With labor rates so high here, a set of tires would cost more than many cars are worth. With all sorts of rebates they were offering, I did get a deal on the Cooper tires, $250 for four tires shipped to the door. Deals like that don't seem to exist for trailer tires.

What bothers me, is that many of these newer trailer tires, and some car tires aren't just failing from dry rot, I've seen quite a few blow out on the highway within weeks, days, and even sometimes hours of being installed.

A guy down the street bought a new camper a while ago, got a real deal on a left over from last year. Knowing about the tire situation and figuring that the tires were likely sitting on the lot for nearly two years, he insisted on four new tires. He towed it 24 miles home the first day, when he backed into the driveway the right fender flair got sucked into the tire. One tire had swollen around the outer perimeter edge about 4" all around and was hitting the flare. one tire on the other side had a 5" bubble on the sidewall. The tires were dated and only a month old by date code, made in china by Westlake. The dealer brought out four new tires and rims for him, the replacements being Kenda Load Stars. As far as I know those were okay, but he's not gone anywhere with it yet.

Cooper tires are hot garbage these days.. I work at a local tire shop and we quit carrying or even selling any Cooper or their other brands. Out of round, garbage. We were sending back 1 out of every 8 not to long ago due to defect.. Switched to Falken tires and some Kumho. Nicer prices, better product, happier customers. Goodyear purchased Cooper tire ~6 months ago so, things might change for the better

As far as trailer tires... The Carlisle USA trail has manufacturing in the USA, but it's a 50/50 shot at this point. They are the only 12" and under tires that 'might' be USA made.
The Goodyear Endurance are all made in the USA.
Hankook has a line of trailer tires now that are made in Korea and Japan. Aside from the Endurance, they are the only other trailer tires NOT made in china... but the Carlisle Radial Trail HD's are not a bad tire.
Westlake is a rubber doughnut that might hold air

Trailer tires are a nightmare and have been for quite a few years now. But your story beats all of the horrors I have ever heard or personally experienced.

If I were you I'd look carefully at you storage or maintenance procedures. Especially tire pressure.

A few years ago I got fed up with paying big money for tires that were junk. I've been buying the cheapest tires I can find since then and have had zero problems.

I think tires are a lot like tools. Snap on was the best 25 years ago, but today many of their products are equaled or beat by hardware store brands.

I don't think this analogy makes any sense when you put it into the tire world. You can find a 17" car tire for $40, but it's not going to last, it's not going to balance well. Just look at the traction ratings on that tire. It might be branded something like Westlake, Nika or Waterfall.. I actually get customers who bring those $40 specials, come back in 2 months for a rotation and the tires are junk. We end up putting on a set of used tires of decent quality to get them by.. There are inexpensive brands that are not bad, but they are not the cheapest like Presa for instance

I don't mind cheap tires on a riding lawnmower.----If a tire fails it is a bonus.-----Quicker trip to the cooler.----A tire failing on your truck / trailer at 60 MPH on the interstate is a different story.-----I avoid tires from the -----Hooflungdung -----branded rack.

Guess I’m luck. Never had a tire issue. Pretty religious about swapping tires 6 years from manufactured date.

Trailered 8,000+ miles a year up until last year. Couldn’t tell you what brand tires are on on either trailer. Just take it down to a friend who owns the local tire shop and take his recommendation.

The majority of his business is serving commercial fleets, most of which are trailers. Lots and lots of construction and “industrial” landscaping trailers. Growing landscaping trees is big business locally.

If they hold up to the abuse of commercial operations they shouldn’t have a problem hauling the boat.

IMHO: lack of use and under inflation are responsible for most tire failures.

You may be correct about p tires as I haven't owned a car in 16 years. As for LT and st, I have not found it to be true. I also don't know how they balance on a machine because I use beads and mount myself. Everything is smooth and trouble free. Yes the cheap tires are typically softer and only last 35k vs 45k, but softer is not a bad thing as far as traction goes.

I know it's not a "cool" opinion, but I've never really cared what the masses think anyways. I remember clearly when the masses said I needed an oil change every 3000 miles, and I said bs. Now everyone admits 3000 miles is way too early and a waste.

Well, beads are ~ok~, we have them at my shop for an as needed basis. If you put those cheap tires on a balancer, you'll find they are out of round, terrible runout and would take a bunch of weight to balance traditionally. You won't notice as much harmonics on a truck as you will a car..

We have a guy that buys his own Kanati Trail Hogs online, swears by them but complains they don't last. When we recommend the GY Duratrac which is the same tread pattern as Kanati copied it, he says they are garbage
