Re: Trailer Tire smoked and froze up

Maybe a ring of rust has formed around the inside edge of the drum? Maybe the shoes have completely worn down and cut themselves into the drum? I've never done brakes on a trailer, but I've seen it on cars and trucks! Do these brakes have a "star wheel" that can be backed off to loosen the brake shoes?

60 posts and we still don't have this thing disassembled. Additionally, because the races appear to be ok does not mean the bearings themselves are ok. You need to inspect every roller for nicks, chips, cracks anf rust as well. The nuts you see on the back of the wheel hold the brake backing plate to the axle. You do not need to remove that. What you need is any auto service manual for a vehicle with drum brakes. A trip to the library would help you understand this assembly tremendously.

i have been reading this and can only see a sticking wheel cylinder or master cylinder causeing this problem.

I really don't think your ready to fix this saftely with out finding a buddy to get you through it the first time.

There are just way to many things that can be done wrong resulting in a departing wheel to DIY it without understanding how it works.

tommays

Threads on the spindle of rear wheel are damaged.

Spindle nut will not go on. Don't know the extent of replacing the thread portion or entire axle.

Cement blocks are not suited for this use and are unsafe. They can crack and/or crumble. It's best to use an additional jack stand under the tongue or two jack stands under the frame close to the tongue.
I was not reccomending cement blocks for under the axle. I only use the cement blocks under the tongue, and even then I use 2 8"x16" blocks with wood on top to spread out the load.

This amounts to about 400 - 500# spread over about a 16"x16" area, or about 200# per block. These are the same blocks used in the foundation of houses. Does not seem like a real safety problem to me.

One of the things I like about this is that you have a big area for the tongue. If I used a jack stand I am always worried what would happen if someone pushed sideways on the tongue or jackstand - could it slip off?

Now I would not use cement blocks:

1. Without the wood to spread the load.
2. Under the axle or anywhere you are talking about a lot of weight.

BTW - I typically leave the jack down close to the ground. While I can't imagine this happening, if something happened to the blocks the boat would only fall about a couple of inches.

If the spindle threads are damaged you need to do one of three things: 1) find a rental shop that has a die set (as in tap and die) that can re-cut the threads. 2) Replace the spindle which requires that the axle be removed, the old spindle cut off and new one welded on by a reputable welder or 3)replace the axle. Remember though, recutting the threads only works for minor damage. If there is severe damage, the spindle nut may not stay in adjustment, breaks the cotter pin and you lose a wheel. Proceed with caution on this repair.

Thanks Upinsmoke. I'm going to look into (tap and die). My trailer is used twice/year. Once to pull boat out go 3 miles home and rest til spring. and vice versa.

I wonder If I could post picture of threads on this forum as I don't believe damage that severe.

Please Do..........

Another Option is;
They make a tool called a Thread File,........

It's a pc. of steel about 10" long,+ about 3/8" square,.....
There are 4 Different patterns cut in to Each End(1 pattern on Each side),..... That's 8 Different patterns.....

You take this Tool,+ Match as Closely as Possible(Usually 1 of the patterns is an Exact Fit), the Threads on the Quill,
to 1 of the 8 patterns on the Tool,+ File the threads Clean...........

I'd Still like to know What Exactly caused the Original Problem,..????...
Was it the Wheel you've already Done,.... Or This 1,.??

Re: Trailer Tire smoked and froze up

When i figure out how to put a picture up here(sometime this afternoon), I'll include the threads. I had thought maybe I had stripped alittle when I removed nut as it did not come off easily like the othe tire on the tandem but took a wrench with heavy pressure but not damaging heavy pressure. My brother thinks the threads were damaged when nut was put on and that caused the difficulty in removing. The tang washer that was behind the nut moved very freely originally and did not seem to be flush with the nut when I pulled off.
