For the normal type you have a couple choices. Either get a prybar under the latch and pry it or loosen/remove the nut on the retainer from the bottom.
A spray can of good penetrating oil and a small hammer. Spray it down good from both sides, top and bottom, then put it on soak cycle over night. Spray again and tap with hammer to try and get it to release.
