Trailer Axle Machined Stepped Surfaces

All,

I'm in the process of replacing the races/bearings/seals in my jon boat trailer hubs. When I reinstalled the hubs I noticed that the is a machined section of the axle left exposed. I replaced the bearing set with the exact same parts and seated the hub per the usual practice. The hub is sitting against a smaller machined shoulder, which I believe is correct.

Why would there be a second stepped machine portion behind the seal? Just wanted to be sure I did this correctly.

Also, the castle nut is tightened right up against the outside bearing with no washer is that ok?

Are the bearing races fully seated in the hubs? If it didn't look like that before it was serviced and the washer fit on the spindle before something isn't right. Were both races removed and replaced?

Are both race installed in the right direction? Perhaps one got flipped and is upside down. May sound like a dumb question but I did that once years ago but caught it before I tried to assemble.

All the internal parts are new. Both sets of races are definitely fully seated. I'll double check to make sure I didn't install one of the races/bearings backwards. I normally take pictures when I take stuff apart, but I don't have a great picture of this area (I'm not the original owner either).

The section in questions was covered with gunk (not grease) so I'm pretty sure it was like this before. There were no washers on the outboard side and none in the bearing kit either. Thanks for the replies.

Sounds like if the seal is riding on the spindle the same place as before you are OK to go.

Are those OE parts?
They make hubs with different back depths.

Will not hurt anything as long as everything is seated and sealed

And there is supposed to be a washer between the spindle nut and the outer bearing.

HARDENED tang washer. Don't use chinesium. Bearing race will spin a little and if washer is cheap it will gall up and sieze bearing.

Ok on the washer. This is a round spindle, without a groove or flat section, so I think I would use a round washer vs a tang or D washer, no? I'll pick up a couple. Thanks...
