Re: towing capacity

For those that are worried about traction, would you try it with a Ram 2500 Diesel 4x4 rated to tow 15000 lbs?

yep no problem as long as you have enough tongue weight to keep from losing traction on the ramp.... Before I got my boat far enough forward on the trailer I couldn't pull it out with my F 350 diesel dually unless it was in 4x4 or it would just spin the tires on dry pavement.... My truck weighs quite a bit more than a dodge too.

Re: towing capacity

i really do not see a problem . when its all over flat ground for a short distance and not over streets you will have no problems. just make sure the boat is properly secured on the trailer. there is a big difference in approved towing capacity and what the car will just make move.

approved towing capacity is the weight the car will manage with acceptable driving and braking characteristics on open roads with an average driver as well margins not to overstress the drivetrain on continious towing and so staying out of warranty issues.

you will be amazed how easy your car i 4low will make this trailer move.

It's not the flat we are concerned about, it's the ramp.

Re: towing capacity

yea I got a friends truck with dual wheels and a 6 something disel engine I think its a 1 ton dodge, yea i could not sleep think all the bad thing that could go wrong so to be safe I am not going to even try it. thanks guys
If your buddy is coming with a real truck then you should try it with the Durango - with tow straps taught to the truck (which is ready to go). If this is going to be a continuing issue it's best to find out if the Durango can do it when you have help.

And, yes, video please. I think the Durango can get it up the ramp if the ramp is dry.

Re: towing capacity

If the Durango tires are on dry pavement and it's in 4 wheel drive, I can't imagine why it would have any trouble with traction. My 1st generation Durango has no trouble pulling a 7400 lb boat/trailer up a dirt ramp in 2 wheel drive. There's got tp be more than twice traction on dry pavement in 4 wheel drive. 1st generartion Durangos are pretty heavy for a mid-size SUV.

I'd be nervous backing a 15000 lb load down a ramp though. The rear brakes are not very effective when backing and the front brakes won't have the weight transfer that gives them all the traction. That said, I'd be just as nervous in a 2500 pickup too. I'd probably put it in 4 wheel drive, leave it in drive, put my left foot on the brake, my right foot near the gas and let gravity tug it backwards.

Re: towing capacity

Good choice. I would hate to hear of anyone getting hurt trying to do this. It is probably possible to do, but from a safety standpoint, I wouldn't!

did he not wrote this in the thread opening post ??

I was wondering if my dodge durango with a 5.2L in 4 wheel low if i could pull a 40foot boat trailer with a 30 foot Bertram with twin dieseles not far just from the ramp to the parking lot next door at less than 1-2 mph and not on the road I am guessing its about 15,000 lbs but all flat ground and very slow. or even if i put an extra spring or 2 in does anyone think its do able Thanks Bob
