Technically, you're right. An Officer would not use the manufacturer's claimed weight capacity as the sole determiner of a safely loaded vehicle. The age and condition of the trailer and connection would be considered. The age, condition, GVW, ride height and suspension action of the towing vehicle while in motion would be factored in, too.


Exactly. So many people claim (more on the RV forum I frequent) that being over the manufactures weight rating is illegal and automatically makes any accident your fault for breaking the law. And it is NOT true. You could be under the rating and be found at fault for having an unsafe vehicle. At least legally, the ratings are guild lines.

Didn't read through the other responses, but my FWD SAAB tows a pair of skis (~1300lbs) just fine. Ramp traction may be an issue, as well as stopping distance.
