Touchy throttle

I have a 94 Regal 256 with a 5.7 Merc and an Alpha One. Boat runs great except when back down from over 3400 RPMs. It is very difficult (almost impossible) to slowly back down from 3400 to 2000, in less than an inch of movement on the throttle you drop from 3400 to 1800 or so. Nto the best thing for a smooth ride.

Anyn ideas? I have checked the cable, there is no kink or loop.

Disconnect the cable from the engine end. Operate the control to see if it still is acting up.
Might be time for a new cable.
