Torn Rubber On Shift Cam Assembly Question

Hi!

While doing my first lower seal/water pump maintenance, I accidentally put a small (nearly pinhole) size nick in the rubber boot on the shift cam assembly. While messing with it, an unknown (to me) fluid began to leak out.

I am wondering a couple of things about this:
- What fluid is inside?
- How important or urgent is this?
- Is there a glue or adhesive I can apply to reseal, or should I be looking into a replacement?

Here is some identifying information and pictures:

Motor: Yamaha 2-stroke outboard. 50ETLJ 1986
Part #11

Thank you for any information you can provide. I appreciate it!

-Matt

is it oil or gear lub?
smell it to see if it stinks like gear lub.

replacement would be in order for mine

I can’t think of a glue or cement to repair that black rubber/ neoprene boot…as 99yam40 said, probably best to just replace it…

Have you drained the lower unit lately to make sure there is no water in there?

to me it seems the level should not be that high.
where is the level plug in comparison to that boot?
you may have water in the bottom causing the level to rise
