Don't buy what you can afford, buy what you need. Save the rest.

Saving is important!

More than 80% of all Americans owe more than they own

Almost 90% of divorces in America site financial difficulties as a contributing factor.

At age 65: (These stats are from a few years ago)
(1) 45% are dependent on relatives
(2) 30% are dependent on charity
(3) 23% are still working
(4) 2% are financially independent
(5) 11 out of 12 women will become widows
The average age of a widow is 52

There are 3 aspects to having all we NEED:

(1) Get a good job. (Not defined by money, but by sense of satisfaction

(2) Be a diligent worker (2 THESS. 3:10...if you don't work, you don't eat.)

(3) Manage your money wisely. A wise man once said, "If we live everyday as if it will be our last, someday we will be right."

(Money isn't that important, after all, Henry Ford had millions and he never owned a Mercedes.)

Another one for those starting out:

Dont Let your fixed expenses (loans, rent, etc) exceed Half of your Monthly "Take Home" Pay.

Open a ROTH IRA and start contributing. You may think its stupid now, but in the future, you will love yourself for it.

You cant lose when buying Real Estate.

Never go deep in debt over a depreciating Asset.

Never Lease a Car.

Nav

If you want to be somebody
Hang around with people that are somebody.
Or
You are a product of your environment.

Financial maturity is giving up today's desires for tomorrow's benefits.
On your next purchase, think of the opportunity cost...A $10,000 purchase now is the same as $217,245 at 8% in 40 years. Or a $0.50 can of soda is the same as $10.86.

The longer you can save, the greater your return will be. So start saving early and often!

If you don't know where you are going, and focus on it, you will probably end up somewhere else.

Re: Top 10 things to tell an 18 year old

Good advice I got from an old man years ago, if you want to buy something, don't think about if you can afford it or afford payments. Look at it like this, how much do you get paid per hour, that is what your time is worth. Then decide how much the item costs. If an item costs $100 and you make $10 per hour, you will need to get 10 hours of use or pleasure out of it. If you won't, it is not worth buying.

You will never get paid what you think you are worth. If you do you will be dissapointed.

LOL

I forgot to post this Aldo. The day after you anounced the nipple thing, the one who this thread is for (among I hope many others) asked to get his lip pierced . . . Funny thing is that I am thinking about saying he can do the nipple thing as a compromise. What the heck? I will only see it when we are on the boat and I understand it really hurts  I figure it may scare him outa puttin' holes in his face . . .

They want to be rebels - buck the system - try and define their individuality, I understand that BUT why do they have to mutilate their bodies & open themselves up to medical problems? That, I don't understand.

I suppose that there is one bright side to this, at least a nipple piercing can be covered up with clothing, unlike a lip piercing. I agree with your line of thought.

My next door neigbors daughter got her belly button pierced. It got infected. The infection got out of control and finally..................
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Hysterectomy, no joke :( . At the time, she was 16 years old.
