You can tell a lot about a person by the company (friends) they keep.

You know right from wrong, always have the convictions to do what’s right.

Always respect your family. In life’s long journey their all you really have.

NEVER be the first one to break a tradition. (Wish I'd listened to that one myself :( )

Never underestimate the effects of your actions.

Note: The first one rings true on different levels as you get older. At least it did for me.

Re: Top 10 things to tell an 18 year old

doo doo rolls downhill, unless your at the top then it is thrown back.

If you open your mouth once in a while, you won't get s#!t on your face.

Don't step aside, step up.

Always stand for something but keep an openm mind to opinions of others.

Don't slap a man who's chewing tobacco.

In the end only a few things matter. Keep these things in mind through life. All people will remember you by is how you treated them, honesty and integrity, work ethic, good morals. Everything else fades and doesn't matter. You can make a million a year, or a thousand a year. None of that matter when people look at you. They may be impressed with wealth, but they will be more impressed with the man you are.

If something sounds to good to be true, it probably isn't.

My daughter is the same age and I hope she will get someting out of this thread as well.

1) Have faith in God
2) Do what you say and mean what you say
3) Never make a major decision when you are: angry, horny, or hungry
4) Life is not fair
5) You know right from wrong, always have the convictions to do what’s right

I love DD's summation statement. That may end up at the end . . .

When your neck deep in Sheet it's best to keep your mouth shut.

If something doesn’t seem right it's probably not.

Know when to stand up, and when to shut up. (see above)

My son knows this. I often ask my wife why our friends seem to get more from us than we get from them (I don't mean things, I mean values and good lessons). So if you knew the friends we see the most often (neighbors) you might actually draw some conclusions about us that I believe are inaccurate, so I am struggling . . .

Dad would tell me when he thought my actions weren't the best.

Look in the mirror and make sure you like the one looking back.

I understood that to mean that you tend to run with a like crowd. If you’re a partier you'll tend to hang with partiers. If you’re a hoodlum you'll hang with crooks.

Like wise if you’re a descent hard working person that’s who you'll tend to socialize with. Although they may not be a mirror image of you they are a close reflection.

As you get older the message rings true in business as well, if you have high moral and ethical standards you will not knowingly work for, or do business with a company that’s morally or ethicaly corrupt.

Work to live. Don't live to work. No one has ever gone to their deathbed wishing that they had spent more time at work.

"Treat others as you would like to be treated."

Easy to say, but hard to live by in the truest sense. We've all heard this one all our lives, but most of us need to hear it again from time to time.

1. Learn the difference between what you really need and what you merely want.

2. Find a way to live on less than you make.

3. Never change yourself to please others, only change yourself to please yourself.

4. Always deliver more, better and faster than you promise.

5. In discussions and debates, the first one to lose his cool loses.

6. You will have some triumphs and some tragedies. They will be consequences of your own decisions, not someone else's.

7. If it moves, salute it; if it doesn't move, paint it; and if you can't paint it, 86 it.(This for military service).
