What happens if there is too much oil in the gas? How bad is this? I'd like some input on this issue... THANKS!!! :D

brian,

You may sacrifice a set of plugs, but that's about it. Don't run it alot at trolling sppeds with the over rich mixture.

My son "double oiled" one of my boats last year two tanks in a row (50 gallons). We never really saw that much difference. We still have the same plugs in it. But we do use Pennzoil Marine blend (partial synthetic).

Good luck!

Then again -- what do you consider "too much oil"?

Just wondering!

I was thinking about doubling up on oil....

So spark plugs may go bad then... sucks.

brian,

There is absolutley NO raeason to double oil unless you are breaking in a new engine.

Double oiling will only, eventually, lead to coked up rings and excessive combustion chamber deposits.

It doesn't hurt if you make a mistake now and then. Just don't give it a steady diet of it.

Re: Too much Oil in the gas.....

djohns19 , you mentioned that you may have to
replace the spark plugs. I just double oiled my
gas to break in my new powerhead. I am vro only
now. the engine did run ruff on the double oil
at idle. It did clear up after that a fair bit
my question is,can you clean the oil out of the
plugs to get a smoother idle,or would it idle
better if the plugs were replaced ? OR would it
not make any difference?

Hello.
There are soft copper brushes on the market. They can be used to clean your plug and they are as good as new again.Unless of course they are old and burnt up.

Re: Too much Oil in the gas.....

A little bit of extra oil won't hurt. Too much, tends to cause a slight loss of power, but as long as you don't give it a steady diet of that, like Djohns says... no problem... Doubleing it up is NOT what's recommended, so I agree with djohns... follow the mfg's fuel/oil ratio recommendations, and it will be fine...

Plugs that are "fouled" enough to cause the motor to mis-fire, can sometimes be temporarily "fixed" and re-used for a short period, as has been stated, but once fouled, they typically are not long for this world, nor providing the strength of spark that a new plug is capable of...

As the plugs get less and less capable of firing the "as-new" spark strength, the combustion process will not get off to as good a start as with a new set of plugs, thus the combustion tends to be some small percentage incomplete, and will eventually lead to reduced power, or worse yet, a fuel load that is still burning as it exits the cylinder, which in the worst case scenario has the possibility of creating a "hot-spot" in the cylinder. Basically the same effect as slightly retarded timing, which can lead to detonation.

2-strokes, because of the other noises they make, are VERY difficult (if not impossible) to audibly detect when detonation ("pinging") is taking place, thus they are more susceptable to internal engine damage, before you "hear" anything going wrong.

New Plugs are WAY cheaper than the possible alternative. I keep a complete spare set (and the wrenchs required) on the boat at all times, so should they foul for any reason, I have back-ups with me.

It's no more expensive to carry them around, than it is to lose a day on the water, fooling around trying to get it to run right... or worse.

Good Luck, Obiwan

Re: Too much Oil in the gas.....

As mentioned above, running a 50:1 engine on 24:1 is not a good idea except during break-in, when it is usually recommended.

It will smoke a lot, build carbon quicker and gum the carbs quicker.

Plugs will need cleaning more often, but not necessarily changing. Cleaning and regapping plugs used to be routine maintenance. I see no reason to throw away spark plugs that are merely dirty. Many old shops have sand-blaster type plug cleaners that will make a plug as good as new once regapped.

The only reason that I can see for replacing a plug is erosion of the electrodes, which offers risk that the tip will break off if bent far enough to reset a correct gap.

Re: Too much Oil in the gas.....

Before you try running too little oil, make sure you have enough money to buy another engine.

Re: Too much Oil in the gas.....

boaterntexas, if your gonna run with too little oil then we'll have to push for your handle to be changed to "suicidal boater from Texas".
With the right balance of oil in the fuel the crankshaft, con rods, bearings, lower cylinder walls, and everything thats in the block gets suciffient oil to continue to do its job without becomming still from friction and ceasing.
Too little oil and any of the things listed above can become overheated a lot, seize up and cause massive damage to the engine.
Never, ever under oil!!!
Ross

Just more pistons should take care of it.
