Re: Too Much Boat?

Going to need some more water in that ditch to float that boat!

Doesn't matter how big of a vehicle, if the driver is unsafe, they are unsafe with anything. Boat looks to be a twin 28-30, so they were probably right up to the edge of the towing limits.

My bet... too little tongue weight...the tail wagged the dog... The size of the boat is a non issue

Doesn't "look" like too much boat to me....looks like a GM 3500 dually. Like most accidents, this is a situation where the driver wasn't being safe.

Bet you if he had a WD hitch on that rig it would have been a different story, well perhaps. I think a 40 foot boat on a trailer may have been pushing the limit of that rig to start with.

It is just a half ton pickup. I think he was really pushing his luck pulling that boat.

WOW... I've never seen a crewcab dually half ton before....

I can say decisively that MY crewcab dually pickup would handle that boat just fine at interstate speeds ALL DAY and in fact has pulled bigger ones (60' houseboat) without issue..... It wasn't too much boat ..... There was something else at play that caused the accident..... Heck, for all we know MAYBE he went off the road to avoid someone who went left of center pulling a 12' tinny behind their mini van........ Of course if I were a betting man I'd stick to the low tongue weight theory.....

I would tend to agree with you. Too bad there is no way to access the information once it is gathered so others can learn from it. It will be a combo of things though. That is a 40 foot boat (according to another story I read on it) So you are talking at least 20K plus trailer, gear, fuel etc. Yes trucks can be rated to pull that much but its for a 5th wheel/goose neck. The limits of a class V hitch is around 18K with a WD setup. More than likely he had Reese 2-5/16 ball that he picked up from Auto Zone.

From my recent truck purchase I still have the ford towing guide for 2013 on hand.
F350 Diesel 4:30 Max 5th wheel 24K
F350 Diesel 4:30 Max conventional hitch 8,500 dead weight and 18,500 with WD hitch

This is a mid 2000's GM we are talking about here. I really doubt it would hold a candle to a 2013 F350 in terms of capacity. He was way over the capability's of that truck as stated by the manufacture.

Re: Too Much Boat?

We see overloaded tow vehicles everyday. I have been guilty myself a few times. My current tow vehicle is an f350 dually so it doesn't happen often any more.

The truck in the picture appears to be a 1/2 ton Denali so I would say it was grossly overloaded. I have seen a guy using a Porsche Cayenne to pull what appears to be about a 26 foot Stryper near my vacation house on the Washington coast. I really hope he has it slinged off the trailer. If his wife knew what he was using her car for ...

Not sure..... Really looked like a dually to me but it's a low res pic.... If it really is a 1/2 ton then the guy should go to jail for that....

We'll we have all seen the other side of this equation. The guy with too much truck who convinces his wife they need a F250 Diesel to tow their 21 foot ski boat. See it every weekend at the ramps.

That's definitely a GMC Denali quadrasteer. They have to have fenders in the rear like that becuase the tires would extend outside the bed if it didn't.

Re: Too Much Boat?

I have gotten many laughs pulling up to the ramp with my 12 foot Jon boat that disappears behind my f350 but the main reason for having it is for pulling goose necks on the farm. The truck in the picture is a half ton GMC Denali with a different looking bed on it. There is a guy in town that has one like it

The truck appears to have the factory cab clearance lights . . . it isn't a 1/2 ton. My guess is it's an early 00's 2500HD-series GMC.

GMC Denali Quadrasteer. It's the same as the one in the photo

Could be a 3/4T although many are 1/2T

The rear axle is wider than a standard axle. Dot requires the clearance lights on vehicles wider than 80 inxhes i think. Its has absolutely nothing to do with capacities.

Re: Too Much Boat?

Lets start by identifying the boat first(so we know what the load is).
