I am in the market for a new Outboard, a 40hp long shaft tiller. I have a 20hp Tohatsu that was a gift several years ago and it has been superb, although I haven’t had to do anything to it beyond oil changes in the time I have owned it. I was looking a a Tohatsu 40 but I noticed that, unlike my Evinrudes and Yamahas s over the years, Tohatsu seems kinda weak on repair parts. Evinrude has piles of specialised sealants, greases, parts kits going back decades...all readily available. Yamaha has everything from yamalube to yamabond with a fair supply of parts. I can’t really find much for Tohatsu beyond oil and gear lube? Am I missing something or does a Tohatsu not really support long term with parts and similar?

I don't think I would buy anything Evenrude at this point, unless you get a crazy smoking deal. BRP will no longer be manufacturing Evenrude motors going forward, so it's iffy whether they will keep producing parts for older motors or just sell of the inventory they have. I bought a little Tohatsu in 2012 and thankfully have so far only needed maintenance parts, but they have been easy to get. If you're after the name branded sealers and lubes, I'm sure anything with a different brand name on it would still work fine. Maybe Tohatsu's marketing department hasn't leveraged their name in that way yet. Though it would be interesting to know for how many years Tohatsu produces parts for old motors.

A new, 4 stroke. I would love to find an older 2 stroke in good shape...but they aren’t plentiful.

The Tohatsu 40, 50, and 60 are all in the same family. Kits are available for many years after the motors go obsolete. In fact, I am repairing a 1986 90 hp unit right now. Evinrude never made oil.

Looking for parts, then it's a legitimate concern but I have not had any problems getting old parts for Tohatsu motors. Sometimes it's even easier because you can find them branded under Mercury or Nissan (for the smaller motors). It wouldn't concern me at all about not seeing Tohatsu-branded " specialised sealants, greases, etc", as those are all just rebranded products made by someone else that BRP or Evinrude or Johnson puts their stickers on. They're not nearly as "specialized" as you're led to believe.
