If the valve is cracked or it is leaking around the valve, you would replace the valve. If you are leaking at the base gasket then you would replace the base gasket.

Its pressed in, so try pulling and twisting at the same time.

You can use the heel of one of your stilettos:) Just a gentle series of taps will do it.

Re: Tohatsu 25hp cold start problem

Will it is not the valve that is leaking it is the gasket under it the leak is coming from the gasket between the power head and the lower unit.So I am getting ready to take the powerhead off and have it ready when I get the parts is there any thing I should replace when I take the head of? and
1-do I need to remove the flywheel? and
2-drop the lower unit to get the powerhead loose?or I can take it out in one piece?
3- what gear should I be in?I am still waiting for the manual but I need to get a head start.Any tips would be appreciated.

No, no and does not matter. Pull the powerhead bolts, disconnect any wiring, and lift.

Re: Tohatsu 25hp cold start problem

Removing the powerhead was so easy it came out in 3 min!!but cleaning the old gasket Was a b***ch it toke about 40 min my question now is when I get the gasket.
1-should I use gasket sealer with it ? or
2- install dry? thanks And BTW I think that it was the L valve that was leaking when I toke the power head out and I had it upside down it leaked some fuel and when I toke it out it was cracked at the bottom the new one is brass that is why they changed so if you have a Tohatsu plastic valve keep an eye on it!!

I got the manual but no Gasket yet the hurricanes caused a delay in shipping from TX that what the dealer said any way as I expected in the manual it say to install a new gasket and torque the bolts no mention off the gasket sealer!! the reason I asked if I should use it is because the old one had it on and I read here that the new gasket do not need the gasket sealer so I want to make sure I do it right so what you think with or without gasket sealer Thank you

Re: Tohatsu 25hp cold start problem

Tohatsu in Dallas ships out every day...Rain or shine. No, is the correct answer in theory. On new mating surfaces it doesn't need it (we would do it anyway). On surfaces that have been gouged by scrapers and still have residue from the previous gasket....Yes, just spread your favorite sealant, but do so lightly.

kandill ...... take gasket sealer, and spread it with your finger on both sides of the gasket very thinly but covering all of the gasket .... once again, as thin as possible .....

Re: Tohatsu 25hp cold start problem

Thank you for this idea I think this way is cleaner and less off a mass than applying it to the motor

Re: Tohatsu 25hp cold start problem

Just to keep you informed I called the dealer every day for this gasket kit man that is crazy. They just got it today but it was to late to go and pick it up so I am getting it tomorrow and I will post the out come after installation and testing.I hade alot off time so I cleand the inside and changed all the rusty bolts sanded and painted the wholl outboard and changed the gear oil it was clean.it looks much better than befor!!I hope that after all the waiting and the work the problem gets solved and by the way is there any thing I should change while the motor is out?I ordered the complete powerhead gasket kit!!and the water pump kit or should I wait until next season to replace?

Re: Tohatsu 25hp cold start problem

Three day delivery on parts to them...So they ordered it on Thursday of last week:) I would not change anything to just change it, but new rings are always a good idea if the engine has over a 1000 hours on the previous set.

Re: Tohatsu 25hp cold start problem

OK I got it running like a champ from the first pull every time it was very easy to put back together no leak and now that it is fixed I can say that it was the check valve that was leaking the plastic was craked all around how ever I still had to take the powerhead off to replace it and to dril the old one out!! At the end thank you all for reading and helping I appreciate it.
