to spark or not to spark

I recently traded for a johnson seahorse 4 (4R74R) It had spark when i got it in september, but ive never heard it run. I replaced the spark plugs (auto light 303) I now dont get any spark! I did the "shade tree" screw driver in the wire test and both are firing. But i have no way to test for weak spark. I was wondering if I got the right plugs (like a fool I trashed the old ones) Also every one suggests changing the water pump but i have not found a listing for the older engines.

Welcome to iboats.

You should be using Champion J6C gapped to .030

Invest in an inline spark gap tester, available at any auto parts store for about 10 bucks. It should jump a 1/4" gap with a bright blue ZAP!!
