I think I destroyed a set of trailer tires by not keeping them inflated properly. I am going to put new tires on but I want to have a portable pump that will be able to get the tires up to 55PSI. I have a pump now but it is meant for car tires and won't go over 40PSI. Any recommendations to a good pump that will provide at least 55PSI for trailer tires?

Ayuh,.... A portable 12v pump, or 120v for the garage,..??

Portable. Something I can keep in the truck. The boat is a royal PITA to get to the gas station to use their pump.

If you have a compressor or access to one, a small portable air tank(Harbor Freight or similar) would be perfect. Mine is about a 3 or 4 gallon unit and will hold about 125PSI...carry it in your truck or car trunk....very handy item!....

Look up ViAir pumps. I've got one in my truck works great. You may need to extend the power leads to get to the trailer or connect it to the boat battery.

I wouldn't be worrying about bringing one with you everywhere. Tire pressure doesn't go anywhere quickly unless you have a leak. I'd just get a decent air compressor for home use on standard 110V outlet. I myself like a 20-30gal oil-lubricated unit because they are much quieter than the oil-less units and useful for a myriad of air tools/projects.

Ayuh,.... Expensive, but No doubt the Best 12v units out there,.....

I was thinking about that. I have a 35 gallon in the shop.

I have a ViAir on board system, best investment I ever made, that and the k-3 train horns!

They make stand alone 12v compressors that work very well and will generate all the pressure you could need. The cheap $30 ones from Walmart and such aren't very good.

I have Ryobi 18v cordless tools and their biggest lithium batteries and have always been very happy with them.. I picked up the inflator/ air compressor unit which uses the same batteries... It is always in my truck... has both an inflator deflator for tubes n air mattresses and a compressor (two separate systems) in one unit... It has no problem inflating my dually and rv tires to 80 psi and the best part is the digital controls... I set it for whatever tire pressure I want and walk away... It shuts off when that pressure is reached.

Even 55 is pretty low. The tires on my trailer are 65psi and the ones on the pontoon are 90.

I don't remember if they are 55 or 65 LBS but I will be filling them to the max pressure from now on. Underinflated tires are going to set me back about $400 plus install.

I'm an avid surf fisherman. Every surf caster on the beach has looked for the holly grail of tire inflation at one time or another. When all is said and done they usually end up with a portable tank. Anything 12 V is painfully slow.

Get a decent size portable tank. Very handy for a variety of uses. I use my as a remote air supply for my nail gun while mending fences.

Then you have never used a good one. The ViAir I bought was because we used to have to air up the 35's on my jeep from 5 psi to 30 psi after offroading. Less than 5 minutes a piece. Bringing a trailer tire up 5-10 psi takes seconds.

go with a home garage air compressor and inflate or check pressures before each trip.

any of these will do you nicely: 3 - 6 - Air Compressors - Air Compressors, Tools & Accessories - Tools & Hardware*at The Home Depot

personally I would avoid any of the pancake versions (bought one for my dad) because they are ear splitting noisey and I would suggest you select a 4-5 gallon version in the under $200 range since they will be the best overall for quality and usefulness if you want to use air tools or nail guns with it. I would be carefull about buying small ones because they don't seam to last for some reason. every small one (1-2 gallon) I bought only lasted a couple of years (2-3). I bought a nice 4 gallon version for $179 and its going on 7 years now still working like new with no sign of wear
