Is there some committee that sits on these matters before it is ordained to be fit for certain status?

Alex

any one think on type of gas like lead or unleaded just though the gas oct has something to do with timing to.

Use MIDGRADE only. Lead is irrelevant now.

-W

I bookmarked this page for further use! Great use of the English layman language Clams! One quick question though...what do you mean by "direct charge" crossflow and regular crossflow (i.e. crossflow in general)? Which is my '76 Merc 500?

Your 500 is plain vanilla crossflow. So your max advance is 34.5 degrees.

The "direct charge" motors appeared in 1970 and most have a sticker advertising such. All of them use the same 2.75 bore and piston with a funny "eyebrow" on top of it. The 402 and all the larger (than 50hp) inline 3's,4's,and 6's were direct charge through the 70's and 80's.

-W

Are these instructions for the single coil models, or the double coil ones as well? My '65 is double is why I ask.

For single. With the double coil set one set of points for 90 degrees dwell, and then set the second set of points to open EXACTLY 60 degrees after the 1st set, regardless of the dwell of the second set.

Other than setting up the points, the text is still good for you. Set the max advance for 34-35 degrees.
-W

For some reason, this isn't a sticky thread at the top of this forum, or in the forumn FAQ. So the backyard mechanics are forced to search & get lucky to find it.

What we are left with is a thread full of <bumps> and ^^ reminders for people to bookmark it on their own.

Here's a really basic question - when you "remove all plugs except #1", what are you doing with #2, #3 & #4??

Thanks
Shaun

Keeping them connected and trying to keep them near a ground so they can spark over if they wish.

-W

Re: Timing and Sync of Merc Inlines (to 1988)

For Timing Event Two you responded to a question in 2004 about bombing down the lake:

You can do it while cranking the motor in the driveway - with all the plugs out or all the carbs empty. Remember at this stage the throttle cable is OFF - YOU run the arm.
Does this mean, plug #1 is now out and grounded with timing light attached?

Thanks again for answering these basic questions.
Shaun

Out and grounded or in and grounded, you just need the signal for the timing light. Odds are it ain't gonna start with only 1 plug in.

-W
