my yahama 200 1988, has begun to fail to respond in either direction occasionly. the switch on the motor has power to and from it. the relays have power to and from them and the motor runs and the hydrolics work fine if i tap the motor housing with a heavy tool while holding the switch depressed. it seems like the comutator is dirty or the brushes are worn. if i remove the motor, (is the pump sealed from the motor) will i have a hyd. fluid leak?

Re: TILT TRIM

Hello
I have a 1998 225 and when I started to have the same problem, it was due to saltwater infiltration thru the rubber grommet at the top of the motor. I haven't heard of anyone else having a problem with water leakage there, perhaps I dislodged the rubber while pressure washing, I have since rebuilt the inside of the motor and put a bead of silicone where the harness goes into the motor.
Open the motor and take a look.
Thanx
Crunch

Yes and no. The motor is sealed, but not the resevoir under it. You need to cover it to keep out debris while working on the motor. I have disassembled, cleaned the armature, reassembled and had work fine rof years. Pay careful attention to the O-ring and small gear which will fall out when you take the motor off. More of a connector than gear. You will have to remove the clamp bracket to get to it. A manual will be very helpful for this operation. While you are in that deep, pull the resevoir and clean the filter. good Luck.

Re: TILT TRIM

thanks ray and capt. c.

what clamp bracket are you referring to? i tried to remove the pump motor but it seems there are three bolts that attach it. one i cannot see or reach. can i pull the armature by removing the upper end cap? the pin that attaches the single ram to the bottom of the head section is totally rusted. the c clips are almost totally gone. i wonder if i can drive out the pin. help. i have ordered a service manuel but it will be a week to ten days before i get it.

Re: TILT TRIM

The clamp bracket is in the way of the third bolt. You will hve to remove the motor from the transom and then disassemble the clamp bracket on the side the trim motor is located. The clamp bracket is the bracket mounting the motor to the bolt. Not going to be a simple job. Bad enough without corrosion.

Re: TILT TRIM

I have a 2001 130HP Yamaha Outboard Also. Yesterday I came out of the water put the motor up, but it wouldnt go back down. I push the power tilt/trim button and I hear the solenoid clicking but the engine will not move. Is the Hydraulic motor ceased? Is it just a wiring thing? It sounds like you guys are having the same situation. Will I need to through all of this just to get the trim to work?

Re: TILT TRIM

More likely that your problem is a solonoid than a motor. There is a terminal where the blue and green wires from the relay box or relays and the trim motor are attached. remove the two wires going to the trim motor and ground the blue and hold the green one to hot battery terminal. If motor trims down, then the relay is bad. Hope this helps. Reverse the wires to trim up.

I have a 1996 Yahama 60hp with power trim. I can trim up and down out of the water with no problem but the trim works for about 5-15 minutes after being in the water on the trim UP option only. The trim DOWN works fine and continues with a controlled DOWN trim as actuated. I thought it was a relay issue and replaced it. I was given advice on how to check it and it is fine. When I get out of the water, I have to release the hydraulic pressure with the screw and pull the motor up manually after putting it on the trailer, having someone tighten the screw with the motor in my grasp. After the motor settles down (which is usually about half way) I try again with the switch. It usually takes only two efforts but the trim up begins working again....if not I trim down to the transom savor and call it a day?!?! Am I just not topping off the fluid enough?? Is there a special way to insert fluid? I have been putting fluid and actuating the trim up and down filling with the motor propped up after several runs up and down???
