I have a leak on the tilt trim at the ram and the cap assembly. I am having trouble with removing the cap assembly. Is there a trick to it or is mine seized up? Is there a way to unseize it?

Re: tilt trim leak

You could try a good spanner wrench and some heat. If you're in a salt water area it could be a problem. BRP makes tools for this but they are expenesive.

Re: tilt trim leak

There is really only one way to remove the cap and that is the correct spanner wrench. Any other attempt will do damage. I have made my own but you need a good drill press to put accurate holes in a piece of 1/4 inch steel plate at the correct radius and press or weld the correct diameter hardened pins into the holes. The steel plate needs to be heavy enough that you can hammer on it. The plugs are very reluctant to move.
Good luck.

Re: tilt trim leak

I'd be careful with heat.. unless the tilt/trim unit is being completely rebuilt..?? We used to pour liquid wrench on the threads and tap on the spanner wrench with a hammer (not too hard) and they'd come off...

I'm having a tough time of it now though.... same problem... the caps do NOT want to come off.

If you get a spanner from the above referenced link, let us know which one you get and how it "fits"...

Thanks

Re: tilt trim leak

If its not as perfect fit, get it red hot and hammer it to dimension, squench in water.
Put a breaker bar on it, tighten it first then loosen. Keep repeating , tighten first then loosen , work it free.
Don't just haul on it until it destroys the cap.

Re: tilt trim leak

Spray it once a day for 4 days with PB Blaster penetrating Catalyst.
It should come right off.
I used a $5 spanner from Harbor Freight part #36554
Good luck.
I just pulled mine yesterday. Now to find the right o-rings
