Tilt & Trim goes up but not down

Have a 1995 Johnson 88hp. Tilt and trim goes up and then hangs up. When I try to lower the tilt I hear the selenoid click. If I repeatedly try to lower the unit (pushing the switch) eventually it will release and it makes a strange noise like a spring releasing. Also, If I use the up switch and then immediately switch to down it seems to work. Any opinions? Could it possibly be a dying battery?<br /><br />Pkosara

Is your manual tilt lock in the up or down position?<br /><br />It should be up.<br /><br />Also, lubricate the two grease zerks on the front of the engine that are sticking out of the steering tube-facing forward.
