I just installed one I got from ebay on my 1978 140. Now I can easily lift it with one hand. With the old one it was hard to lift with both hands. Mine just has a single unit. The old shock wasn't visibly bad. There was no sign of bad seals or leaks.

i dont think you can rebuild them.but they can be bought from ishopmarine.com enter your engine model number and search there parts diagram.expensive though

Well I finally got tired of the head aches, and sold the boat.

Looking for a different one now, and now that I have had these issues I will be more careful when I choose my next boat.
Thank to all who tried to help me here, this has been a good experience, and all of you helped to educate me.
