Tilt and trim help

Was on the lake the other dsy ans out of the blue without anyone touching anything the motor trims up. Using the trim switches on the motor or helm had no effect. Turned the ignition switch on then off the tilt motor stopped. Was then able to use both trim switches on the helm and motor to work as should. Coming back to the dock it did it several more times. Turn the ignition switch off and back on again seems to reset the system. The motor is a 2 stroke 150hp 2006. Anyone have a clue as to where to start looking? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I would suspect a relay problem but don't know where to look. Thanks in advance.

The thumb operated toggle switches can get water in them. The water sinks to the bottom, completing the up circuit. Best to check those first.

I have never seen water get into a motor-mounted PTT switch (if factory). Rain has gotten into my throttle mounted PTT switch a couple of times.

Why not spray some wd-40 or equivalent into the bottom of the toggle switch, to displace the water.

I took the helm switch apart. Very simple rocker switch and inside was clean and shiny. The contacts on the back of the switch was clean as well. No corrosion or water intrusion. So that part does not seem to be the problem. I don't see how the helm switch could activate without some kind of pressure exerted as there is a small spring inside that keeps everything neutral. It looks like the same switch Yamaha used on my last boat.

don't remember ever seein' a tilt/trim circuit being wired inta tha key switch for power.. at least not factory..???

Since they are relatively cheap, I would replace both relays.

They should be the same as a standard relay used in cars for the last 5 decades, so you can save a few bucks by buying them at you nearest auto supply store.
Look around under the cowl and you'll find them, 2 -- 1" square cubes plugged into a socket.

Remove them and take them to the store for the guys to match.

Save the old ones for spares.

Gee, buy the marine rated relays. Remember auto parts can spark, and that is bad with the gasoline fumes under the cowling....

Morning Duke..... you will remember this. The Gen1 series square controller with the big 12 pin remote you had to turn key on to make trim and trailer buttons work.

yes sir!.. man o man.. thats quite a few "coffee stains" back..

most first gen and earlier stuff is really startin' ta fade away along with a lot of other things... still beats tha alternative though!!!

Havn't been out on the water since I took the switch apart but I don't that was the fix. I ordered the relay the other day so after I replace that I'll get back and report results. Thanks for the input and suggestions.

Well I got the boat wet last thur and the problem did not repeat itself. I don't think it healed itself or my taking the switch apart fixed it. If it happens again I'm gonna start replacing parts. the electrical part of the system is simple and parts are not that expensive. Thanks for all those who offered to help.
