I bought a boat on one of those sell it your self web sights and find out I have a ticking in my 1995 Murcury Tracker 115 motor (witch was not heard by my untrained ears). When I bought the Boat I had a compretion test done, Comprestion was good in all cilinders.

I have taken it to 2 different shops and they both say that I need to change the power head. Both places think it ran low on oil at some point.

If it is something in the power head why does the power head have to be replaced insted of rebuilding for less (if it is a rod). Is it that hard to rebuild, and that is why they say to just replace the power head

Just want to go fishing

Have no idea what you mean by "A TICKING"
Every OB i've had has had a bit of "TAPPING" noise if you listen -
OB's are not like car motors, they have a bit of noise to them -

Can you be more descriptive. I have to say "ticking" doesn't really tell me much. Is it all the time? What do the plugs look like? Is it under hard acceleration? What"s the timing? What grade gas are you using? How old is the gas? DON'T just trust the boat shop.......Do your own homework. Most are reputable, knowledgeable professionals, BUT !!!!!

Re: Ticking in my motor

Ticking is the words the mechanics used. yes it is all the time. I replaced the plugs. I know he ajusted the timing but don't relly know mush more than that. I drained all the old gas out and replaced it with new gas (87)grade. I had all the carbs (4) rebuilt. A new water pump and new oil put in when I bought the boat. I did not tell the 2 different mechanics what each other said. I think it is funny how they both said the same thing. I have talked to other people and I do know this motor is louder than most with the 4carbs. maybe I should use some ethanol remover

There is no such thing as ethanol remover and that is not the source of any ticking anyway. Unless you can be more precise besides "ticking all the time" there isn't much help we can offer. Use a metal bar placed to your ear and put the other end on the engine. That should tell you whether the noise is on just one cylinder, all of them, or two or three of them. If the compression was ok, then the next test would be a leakdown which is a better test of the rings sealing ability. Unfortunately most owners don't know how to do that test and don't have the necessary tools. Check for things that may be rubbing on the flywheel.
