Throttle play

I'm not sure if I actually have a problem or not but when I put the throttle down it seems to not engage into gear until about 2-3 inches forward or reverse. Is this too much? And if so, what do I do to fix it? 94 mercruiser 4.3

Ayuh,... So long as it shifts, 'n goes, it's just the way it oughta be....
