throttle in neutral?

i have a 1987 chaparral 187xl and i was wondering how i would go about throttling in neutral.

With your handle verticle (neutral) pull it outwards (away from the coaming) and that should disengage the shift mechanism and allow you to push the handle forward for throttle only operation. Do not rev the motor excessively with no load as bad things can, and will, happen...

The idea is that you are not supposed to be able to rev above idle unless you want to handgrenade your motor.

ya.....revving it in neutral is not going to blow an engine....doesn't mercruiser recommend you flush at 1300 rpm?

You have to be able to set the throttle ( in neutral ) at above idle speed in order to cold start the engine.

Looks to me like that pinkish looking button on the underside of the handle might have something to do with it.

Yes. And the amount of throttle travel is limited when in neutral to prevent over-revving.

It's an IO guys. With a carbed engine, you need to pump the throttle lever a time or two to prime the engine, and to give it some throttle up around 1000 to 1200 rpm to warm up a bit before idle. It's done all the time. He doesn't have to rev it up till it blows.
