Here is a link to a related speedometer question. But first a comment on the theory and operation of the boat speedometer. <br />"the speedo works as a "bourdon tube" type instrument<br />I/E a coiled tube usually of brass.<br />as pressure of any kind is applied it tries to "straighten"<br />the bottom of the tube is hooked to a chain<br />and pulls on usually a chain <br />that is hooked to a gear ..than the gear rotates...<br />that gear is moving the "pointer" of the instrument that is is attached to.<br />"hence" the pressure applied to the "bourden tube " reflects ......what ever it is calibrated to ..speed , and or pressure...<br />In a short :::::<br />the water pressure that the "pitot tube see's "<br />by being placed in water usually on the transom,just barely in the water at speed .<br />that pressure is then transfered to the speedometer by the usually small plastic hose. <br />the pitot tube is not the hose ..<br />It is the device that is in the water , airstream if you are in a airplane.<br />Now just how was that watch made?? or did you just ask for the time ???<br />lol "<br /> http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=012626#000005 <br />RE: Powercat udate, Boat Restoration; Mark 78 backfiring, Mercury outboard...troubles.<br />Hey Baylor, I think you either need a little more time or a little more JD.
