Thermostat preventative maintance?

Hello again everyone.

I have a 89 150 that sees almost exclusive salt water usage. It will occasionally come up the river but even then its still a salt area. My question is I've been replacing my t-stats every other year. Couldn't I just boil them off to clean the salt buildup? I always try to run my boat on the hose for a few moments when I come in and usually do with a 1 out if 7 or 8 trips miss. But I still get some serious salt buildup in there. So could I boil the t-stat out to clean it and that would also let me do a quick visual inspection that there opening correctly. Thoughts? Again I'm an diesel mechanic and I like to apply my knowledge to out boards but it's always good to verify first.

By the time your half way home from the ramp the salt is dry. Flushing may help some. The T stat you clean is as good as the one you buy. + you know it works.

Buy a can of 'Salt Away' and drop them into it, but do not 'boil' them as the excessive temp might destroy them.

I second the use of Salt Away, but use their mixing unit and instructions. Use after every trip.

The thermostats are made for salt water use. The ones in my '98 Johnny are original, and are used in saltwater and never flushed. I think your maintenance is overkill.

I've had too many times where I got overheat alarms that now I just change the tstats every year as routine maintenance.

G-Daddy, do you also replace the waterpump components as well? That would seem to be the first step....
