thermostat installation

I am replacing the thermostat on my 1957 Johnson 35hp, RDS-20. I can't find anything in my manuals to tell me what position to place the new thermostat. Does it matter, or should the little "V" notch in the top point toward the engine?

I haven't replaced the thermostat on my RDS-20, so I'm not sure. I did take the cover off, but it had a new thermostat in it already. I didn't notice the notch, though.<br /><br />Is this a notch in the top outer edge? If so, it could be there to line up with a mating raised area on some engines. OMC used the same thermostat on a bunch of engines for a long time.<br /><br />I can't see that it would matter much, frankly. The thermostat opens up vertically, so I doubt that alignment would make any difference. If there is a raised area in the housing casting that matches the notch, well, then, that would be a different story.<br /><br />Sorry I can't give you a definitive answer, and Paul Moir doesn't seem to be around today. Logically, though, I don't see how it would matter.

Thanks CATransplant. The notch is in the top of the valve but does not engage anything. I think it is just there for an orientation marker. I installed the T stat with the open part facing the inlet tube, figuring that that would allow maximum flow.<br /><br />Where did you tansplant from?

From California, hence the CA. I moved to Minnesota last Summer.
