I was trying to remove and check the thermostat on my 1991 48 spl. I tried to remove the cover with a cresent wrench and part of the nut broke.

I tried to use a pair of big channel locks to grab the outside but it keeps slipping.

The cover itself is some sort of hard plastic. I have tried heating the block but it doesnt want to budge.

Any thoughts?

I guess I just have to destroy the cover and hope I can get all the pieces out?

You can see it the pic where the plastic cover is chipped.

Yeah I was turning it lefty loosey.

I am kinda baffled I cant get it loose. Its a metal to plastic connection.

It must be really corroded.

What is the method of destruction?:)

I would chip off the rest of the powder coat and then try a large pipe wrench maybe with a cheater bar.

If it is really tough I would try to "cut" across the center of the cover with a grinding wheel and place a screwdriver in the center of it and try to turn it with some leverage.

I also noticed in the pic you might want to remove the spark plug before you do this. to avoid the possibility of breaking it off by accident.

looks to me, like it leaked, some tried to tighten to stop leak. probably had it apart and did not use new gasket.

apply liquid wrench or any good product for that purpose . let sit a while and spray again. get a file and clean up socket head so that a socket will fit again. Go to a rental store and rent a elec. impact wrench. spray it again. then give er sh-t!!
