Bought a 1973 15' Hornet the other day and picking it up today. The transom and floor looked pretty good but won't know until I get it home. There is a lot I plan on doing with it like cutting out the back compartments and using them somewhere else. Thinking about putting some kind of green in it and calling it "The Green Hornet". Should make a good Spoonplugging boat.

Re: The Green Hornet

Thats a really well laid out deck plan, and in extra good cosmetic shape.
Are there any soft spots in the deck? near the rear platform?
It looks like theres a bit of sag there.

Not that I can tell. It looks like I won't be able to get it until tomorrow so I'll know better then.

Finally got her. The deck and transom look good but I will know more when I remove the back compartments. I ended up buying the Hornet for $300 and they even threw in the trolling motor.

Re: The Green Hornet

Brought the boat home from storage to really take a look at it. As I was pushing it into the driveway I heard some sloshing. The original owner obviously had the plug still in it. It is a metal cross shape plug that I could not get out until I got a tire iron. May have to change that one. It started pouring water for a solid 20 minutes. As far as I can tell the floor is solid and so is the transom but I have no idea what the stringers look like. It looks like I may have to replace at least the floor. Won't know about the stringers until I start exposing them. Wonder If I should just cut a hole in the floor to see if the stringer are rotted? At least the boat is about 250lbs lighter now.

Re: The Green Hornet

Hadn't had a chance to work on the boat because it has been stored somewhere else. Finally cleaned out the garage and made a cradle for it to sit on. The boat is extremely heavy. I just know the stringers and foam are saturated with water. Water has been dripping out of the drain hole since August. I plan on removing the floor and take a good look at the transom. I'm sure this boat was built with polyester and resin back then. Should I stick with polyester?

It sounds like its gonna be a gut job for certain.
Polyester is good unless you have extra money for epoxy.
BE sure to order unwaxed resin, it makes layup's go much quicker and easier not having to sand between layers of resin.

The polyester resins are fine to use......take some pics and post once you get the deck out. Outboard run okay? Sounds like you got a good price on it.

No, the outboard was not included. I have a 25 tiller that is going on it. I may have paid too much but it's the exact hull that I was looking for.

My grandfather once told me that a good deal is one that the seller and buyer are both happy, regardless of the price. If it's the boat you want and are pleased with it then you didn't pay too much and you got a good deal. Good luck with it.

Re: The Green Hornet

Got to work on it some more this morning. Tore out the back compartment and started tearing out the floor. It was what I expected. Water still under the floor and the floor was saturated. Drained about another 2 gallons of water out. I guess back in the early '70's this boat manufacturer decided flotation wasn't needed. Suited me fine since I didn't have to clean it out.

Re: The Green Hornet

Worked on the boat yesterday. Was trying to pop the cap off and I must have drilled out a thousand rivets. Must have had more rivets than an aluminum boat. Got to looking under the cap and found the fiberglass tabs to hold the cap on. The problem I'm having is actually getting a grinder or tool of some sorts to access the tabs. Really contemplating on leaving the cap on and working around it but I would feel a lot better if I could take it off. If you look at the picture on the above post, you will notice the front deck. There are tabs under the deck that are almost impossible to get to. Any suggestions?

See if you can reach up with a sawzall, if not then wrap some elec tape around a hacksaw blade to make a handle.

Can't reach with a sawzall but the hacksaw blade is an excellent idea. I will give that one a try tonight.

Re: The Green Hornet

Worked on the Hornet tonight. Been trying to get the cap off but can't get to all the fiberglass tabs. Cut the front bulkhead and am able to easily get to the front of the floor. At least the hull will hold it's shape with the cap on. Got almost all of the floor removed. After that comes the transom.
