I live in New Jersey where there are a lot of Giants fans. So you know that there were a lot households watching the game in the greater NJ/NY area last night. We had some relatives over, and Jamie (17) had some of his friends over and we had a small party.
While I watched the game, I had my laptop on my lap and was streaming video from Fox from a program I missed and wanted to watch. I now have Sprint Mobile Broadband service (works through the cell phone towers), and was getting nice 1.1Mhz download and 600Khz upload speeds. The video feed from Fox was smooth as glass. I noticed that when the Giants missed the field goal and the game went into overtime, my streaming video suddenly got choppy. I went to speedtest.net and ran a test to the local NY server and my speeds dropped by over 40%! When the Giants missed the field goal and the game went into overtime, everyone got on their cell phone and started calling their friends! Holy Cow! After the commercials, the speeds improved, but were still down about 20% all through the overtime play. When the Giants made the winning field goal, my internet speed dropped a whopping 50%!!!!!
Just goes to show you when everyone gets on the cell phone at the same time, they really slow down the system. Kind of like everyone in the house flushing the toilet at the same time - not a good idea.
I was yelling at the kids, because 4 teens were on the couch all texting on their phones, and they were TEXTING EACH OTHER SITTING AT OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE SAME COUCH!!!!! They were not helping the situation any.
Anyway, just thought I would share that little side affect of the Giants/Packers game last night.
