Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome
Jim—at least they weren’t barracuda.....a tad exciting when yer bare feet have to share a bilge with a load of those! that was truly the hottest bite I’ve ever been on top of.....I was just dumping the fish in bottom of the boat cuz things were happening too hot n heavy to whack em. I basically caught a 10-fish limit, all of em in 5-10 lb range, in under 90 minutes. For once, virtue had some rewards, as the bite had wholly quit by time most people were on the water.
Thanx for everyone’s input on the tank placement Q....plumbing some uncharted waters, but I figure this might be something others will want to try down the road given how well the tank fits, so I might as well document. If I were starting from scratch, I might just shim the entire floor up about ?" and then rout as needed for tank clearance.
I hadn’t thought about the side panel height, but since I still need to drill the holes to mount em to the alum side supports, this shouldn’t be a big problem. Also thanks for reminder abt the hydrocarbon swell Q....I was all over this when I was planning on putting tank in console but guess I forgot about it when I bailed on that plan. I have plenty of side to side room even with the wire conduit. Moeller shows tank height as 7.25", so multiplying by 1.03 gives me 7.4675". So I’m looking at maybe ?" above stringer-top level with the supporting shelf thickness added.
decking is currently 3/4". Although this is that last crappy batch of Arauco that keeps wanting to warp despite proper storage....remember that I had to completely toss n replace my freshly glued up transom due to this. it’s bowed up at the sides on a couple of the panels enough that I’ll have to attach to stringers first and then recruit a carnita-lovin’ friend to stand on edges so I can attach to ribs.
JB, you gave me a possibly great idea---Cutting it out for the tank like some of y’all have done for ski and rod lockers, and then just covering opening with diamond plate aluminum might be enough by itself for clearance, without requiring a major bridge or a step up between deck panels....I agree that’s a recipe for possibly tripping, and Murphy would ensure it happened when I was hooked up to a 60 lb tuna. The diamond plate would make it look neat, but I might have to coat it in something to keep it bare-feet-friendly in the sun. pondering.............
