Don't forget the +/- 3% swelling for plastic tanks, in the up dimension as well.

What plywood is currently down or cut for the deck, 3/4" or 1/2"?

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Jim—at least they weren’t barracuda.....a tad exciting when yer bare feet have to share a bilge with a load of those! that was truly the hottest bite I’ve ever been on top of.....I was just dumping the fish in bottom of the boat cuz things were happening too hot n heavy to whack em. I basically caught a 10-fish limit, all of em in 5-10 lb range, in under 90 minutes. For once, virtue had some rewards, as the bite had wholly quit by time most people were on the water.

Thanx for everyone’s input on the tank placement Q....plumbing some uncharted waters, but I figure this might be something others will want to try down the road given how well the tank fits, so I might as well document. If I were starting from scratch, I might just shim the entire floor up about ?" and then rout as needed for tank clearance.

I hadn’t thought about the side panel height, but since I still need to drill the holes to mount em to the alum side supports, this shouldn’t be a big problem. Also thanks for reminder abt the hydrocarbon swell Q....I was all over this when I was planning on putting tank in console but guess I forgot about it when I bailed on that plan. I have plenty of side to side room even with the wire conduit. Moeller shows tank height as 7.25", so multiplying by 1.03 gives me 7.4675". So I’m looking at maybe ?" above stringer-top level with the supporting shelf thickness added.

decking is currently 3/4". Although this is that last crappy batch of Arauco that keeps wanting to warp despite proper storage....remember that I had to completely toss n replace my freshly glued up transom due to this. it’s bowed up at the sides on a couple of the panels enough that I’ll have to attach to stringers first and then recruit a carnita-lovin’ friend to stand on edges so I can attach to ribs.

JB, you gave me a possibly great idea---Cutting it out for the tank like some of y’all have done for ski and rod lockers, and then just covering opening with diamond plate aluminum might be enough by itself for clearance, without requiring a major bridge or a step up between deck panels....I agree that’s a recipe for possibly tripping, and Murphy would ensure it happened when I was hooked up to a 60 lb tuna. The diamond plate would make it look neat, but I might have to coat it in something to keep it bare-feet-friendly in the sun. pondering.............

If you are so inclined, you could also route the edge of the plywood at the opening so that the diamond plate is flush too.

That'd only be 1/8" +/-, but that too could be a trip hazard when ya hook the ole' white whale. Assuming of course the pursued game fish increase in size proportionate to the boat's size increase over the porta-boat

Can you raise the floor ONLY under the center console?

edit: even if it sticks-out from the sides a little, it shouldn't be a tripping hazard...throw some butt-rests for rod racks on the protrusions & call it a day.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Willy, the answer is to just follow the warm weather south.....just gotta find some way around that pesky work stuff.

So how much does it mark me a Sick Puppy if I find I’m dreaming about metal boats? I was in the portabote on a lake, watching a guy with a huuuuge tin boat, at least 23-25', but what caught my eye was the fact that it floated fine despite not having a transom. Then later I saw the guy portaging the boat, singlehanded. Paging Dr Fraud....

Decent progress on the boat last night with the aid of Mr. Zevon, but no pix yet. Actually assembling the console for good....finally got done with endless varnishing. I’ll get some pix when I have something that looks fotogenic.

I’d be making more progress if I wasn’t still getting over a cold. But Mr. Townshend said it best on designing tin fishing boats (who knew?) “Sickness will surely take the mind where minds can’t usually go...."

I am going to order the 25-gal tank today. This is not gonna be cheap....probably will add about 400 to cost of boat by time I buy all the supporting aluminum....but I can’t turn down the chance to add so much fuel capacity and do such good things for the boat’s CG and fore-aft weight distribution....I’ll be VERY glad I did it the first time I have to head into 3'+ surf exiting a boca.

Gracias a todos for the input. I think what I’m going to do on the “bridging”, since the interference is less than the thickness of my deck, is cut out the plywood deck panels for the tank, then rout an area on top to a slightly larger dimension for a section of plain (no diamond plate) .125" (3mm) sheet alum that will cover the tank and lay flush with the deck top surface. Screw/rivet that down securely and then just cover over the whole mess with the Nautolex so I don’t even have a bump or just a hint of one. Hopefully. This will let me avoid completely modifying plan for bow storage area, and I’ll set up anchor points to strap the fishbox down over it to serve as step up to bow.

I can’t put it under the console for sevl reasons: 1) Tank will be 18"x47" 2) This would get me back into issue of how to do the filler so it’s safe n legal; and 3) the dern console is already too high.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

oh, and another Q:

I have the sliders about ready to go back in (subject to remembering that I need to trim 1/4" off to compensate for my 3/4" deck.... ) and find that one of the plastic pieces at the top has gone missing. Has anyone found a good replacement for these? I’m referring to the plastic U-channel stapled to the sliders, that the sliders slide on where they fit into the aluum channel at top and bottom. Thanks!

Good Q, B2. Mine are brittlezed and breaking up. I haven't found a source either. It's only plastic U channel, but I'm looking on and off too.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

if i don't find anything to replace it, i guess i could cut the sliders down by more than 1/4", rip down some HDPE cutting board on the table saw into about strips about 1/2-5/8" wide, and glue/screw it to top n bottom of slider panels with the screws countersunk. i suspect the doors would slide fine w/o it but might rattle in the track. i have to go to lowe's tonight so i'll take a stroll through there and see if i can find anything that will work.

I haven't tried Lowes, but what I saw at HD was plastic channel for bathroom paneling. Not thick enough though.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

Tank, aluminum, nautolex plan sounds great.

Looking up something else @HDPE plastics, I ran across this about adhesives & etc w/ HDPE:
Bonding
Because of the high chemical resistance of this material, there is no “bite” on the surfaces at room temperature, making only adhesive bonding possible. Pre-treatment of the joint surfaces improves wettability
.

According to R?chling, the following adhesives are suitable for bonding the material:

Pressure sensitive Solvents and dispersion binders
Contact adhesives Polyurethane
Two-package system Epoxy resin, polyurethane
Hotmelt adhesives Vinyl copolymers

Contact adhesive Polyurethanes? Like Gorilla glue?

Dreams of floating transom-less & lightweight tin boats? You got problems my friend, muchas grande problemos.........

And not the kind a quick round of a general antibiotic followed by liberal consumption of a few cervezas will cure......

Don Julio Real perhaps. W/ obligatory lime & salt, of course. :watermelon:

B2 --- Plan seems sound. Should be interesting as always on this site, to follow the pictorial and verbal progress of the mothership....

JB, maybe more like thorazine or haldol....never mind the tardive dyskinesia!
Jim, your term is more apt than you realize since one of my intentions for this tub is to be able to overnight it so i can start right out on the fishing grounds at dawn.

zero progress last night, although i learned that grocery shopping while woozy and semi nauseous is good way to cut the grossery bill...... this dang bug just don't seem to quit. hopefully i can make some headway tonight. at least, i'm going to move the console into a warm area.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

trying again here....finally found a pic that nicely shows why i want that tank below deck, let's see if it shows up this time. nope. sorry try this: http://www.panoramio.com/photo_explorer#user=1135939&with_photo_id=6140911&order=date_desc

OK, that seems to work. that was shot on the outer edge of Isla Margarita, the sand spit barrier island that forms the outer edge of Mag Bay. let's get airborne..... but it's a short run of under 25 miles to killer offshore fishing from there.

forecasts are for a really nice weekendhere ....highs around 70, lows in mid 30s and not too much wind. so i'm going to try to get some paint on the hull exterior, remnants of this cold bug permitting. got the side panels ready to go back into boat last eve, and put the console onto a piano dolly to facilitate reassembly (so i can move it around to get best light and access). hopefully i'll have some good progress to show y'all on Monday. have a good weekend everyone!

Photo looks like a really nice place, but I don't think I would be trying to get out over that surf.:behindsofa:. Hope the weather holds so you can get your painting done. Weather is nuts lately -23c yesterday morning, 4 pm it was +1c and this morning -18c, go figure.

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

I think I’m finally getting over this bug. Kicked a little boat booty this weekend:

–found a bottom feeder friendly solution at Ace Hdwe for the plastic edging on the top $ bottom of the sliders (more on this manana when I get pix)

–got the console onto 2 piano dollies (after Sr Murphy showed my why one was not enough, by causing it to overbalance and lacerate my palm.....) so I can move it around for easiest assembly
P1010136.jpg

–worked on final assembly of console

–all console trim is Officially Cut (I was missing a few pieces) and is now being varnished....need a few more coats before I can install
P1010137.jpg
[/IMG]

--painted the steering wheel spokes to cover the faded-to-blue anodizing. The next episode of Pimp My Boat will feature a lace-on white cover for rim.

–got side panels 100% ready to go back into the boat, speakers mounted and everthang
P1010134.jpg

–the 25 gal tank is on the way as of Friday eve

–figured out how to get rid of the rear bimini straps altogether, for about $40 (this will have to wait for pix as well, too hard to explain)

Re: the 1967 Holiday 18 and Multiple Boat Syndrome

oh, and I painted the hull. ;)

As I threatened, I only did it down to the line where the alum section for the bottom meets the side (just below the chine); may do more later but I’m not sure, since anything I do below a certain pont will get scraped off on rocks etc.
I just put a screw jack on trailer rail and padded where it met hull with some scrap redwood 2x6, then jacked it up and did one side at a time.

Prep consisted of scuffing the old paint and feathering edges of all gravel rash etc

scrubbing with dish soap and a scotchbrite then rinsing well incl. under the rub rails (lots of dirt under those), blowing all water out from under rub rails with air hose, toweling dry,

spot priming with self etching primer and masking.

Sr Santana and some of his friends helped; the total prep for the port side of hull was completed in less than the time it took for the old album “Caravanserai” to play. I found a ton of dents I hadn’t seen before, but decided to just leave em alone since I already coated the inside of hull.
